rather than a fancy cake covered in fondant or thick icing (which i hate the taste of) i’d rather have a far more simple cake – sponge/buttercream etc and without too much decorations/ i feel like nowadays cakes are designed to be photogenic rather than delicious

or maybe cupcakes?

Something fresh and light with berries!

 

Or better yet, you could ask the mom to be what dessert she’s been craving and make a tower out of it. For me, it could be DONUTS.

@newname_99:  I agree with going the more simple route.  I threw a baby shower for my SIL last fall.  The theme was “My little punkin”.  We did cupcakes with cute little sugar pumpkins on top.  There were cute and delicious.
