I don’t know what I would choose but two points:

    1) Female Genital Mutilation as it’s commonly practiced in the Middle East and Africa is NOT the equivellent of circumcision, sanitary environment or not.  Female circumcision of the clitoris is basically done to demonize women, is done on an adolescent girl rather than a baby, and is extrememly dangerous and often causes permanent harm.  Male circumcision may be controversial, but it’s not nearly as dangerous and the part that it removes is not anatoomically paralel with the clitoris.

Anatomically, I’m quite sure that the closest equivelent of cutting off a woman’s clitoris would be to cut off the man’s penis.

    2) I’ve noticed a few people have said that they are sure they would/would not do it but that they also weren’t aware of the controversy or hadn’t thought much about it.  For those people I’d just like to encourage you to do a little reading and think about it a little (if and when you’re actually having a baby, obv).  Both sides have very good arguments and I don’t believe there’s a “right” answer, but if you ever do have a boy it’s good to make the decision from an informed place.  I guess all I’m saying is don’t entrench yourself in a position – there’s lots of good and compelling information out there.

I’m going to leave that decision up to Fiance if we ever have a boy. I have however told him that if we have a son, and if he is circumcised, we will NOT be following the Korean practice of waiting until our child is an adolescent to have it done!!!! I used to teach kids, and evey once and a while, a parent would SEND THEIR KID TO CRAM SCHOOL just hours after being circumcised!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  If it’s going to be done, it’s going to happen before he can remember such things.

It’s not my body, and unless your son is at high risk for HIV or penile cancer, it’s a completely unnecessary cosmetic procedure.  I’m sure my gentials would be easier to clean if I didn’t have labia, but I wouldn’t consent to having them cut off.  Unless he develops phimosis and needs it done, it’s the child’s choice.

From what I’ve read/heard it is a totally medically unnecessary procedure. That being said, there are cultural/cleanliness issues to consider. I think I’ll leave it up to Fiance. He seemed better equipped (pun intended) to make that decision.
