I just wanted to plug my new favourite fitness activity: pretending to beat the crap out of people/things!
If you haven’t heard of it, Krav Maga is an Israeli martial art used by their military, police, etc, that combines really effective moves from a bunch of different disciplines. One of the coolest things is that it focuses on effective defense first, refinement of technique second.
I finished a 6 week course last month and am starting a more intense 12 week course in January, and of all the things I have done, it has been the thing to most dramatically change my fitness. Prior to Krav, I was jogging and spinning on a regular basis, as well as attending some core classes at the gym and doing Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred occasionally. All these things did not even begin to prepare me for my intro class.
Krav Maga totally changed my opinion of the importance of strength training, especially for women. The first few days made my upper body feel BROKEN, but after that, no pain!
A lot of people are using Krav for getting into shape, and it’s definitely addictive and fun. It’s also great for empowerment and confidence – I know how to get out of so many choke holds, and I know seven different ways to elbow someone, which is so very pleasing to me.
Has anyone else had an experience with Krav Maga? What about another martial art that has you excited/terrified-(but-loving-it) about working out?
