I think it depends on your rehearsal dinner. If it’s casual, a sun dress or pants would be fine. Heck, even jeans would be acceptable. If you are doing a bit more fancy dinner, I would dress up a bit more.

I think brides just like to dress up for their rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. It depends on the wedding how formal the dinner actually is, but as I bride I will likely buy a simple dress just for that occation, because it is special for me.

@Aquaria:   It’s up to you!  Also, consider your rehearsal dinner venue and if you already own something appropriate to wear.  There’s no rule that says you must purchase a new dress but, hey, I’m always open to any excuse to buy a new dress, lol.  😉

And there are no ignorant questions!

@Aquaria:  the rehearsal dinner dress is for the bride at her rehearsal dinner, not the guests. It doesn’t have to be formal. Some brides like to have a white dress to stand out at the bride, others just want an excuse to buy a new dress 🙂

ETA: if you are the guest (it sounds like you are) a sundress is fine. Basically whatever you’d wear the restaurant it’s being held at On a normal day.

You don’t have to buy a rehearsal dinner dress, but a lot of brides like to.  My rehearsal is going to be an informal cookout on our patio, so I’ll be wearing a nice sun dress or something more casual.  But other brides I know have their rehearsals at really nice restaurants and people will dress up a little more.

It depends on where your rehearsal dinner is being hosted.  We’re having ours at a gastropub, so I’m going with a dressier sundress.  If we had it somewhere more upscale/formal, I’d wear something appropriate for that location.
