My great aunt redid her kitchen with IKEA cabinets more than 10 years ago, and they’ve really stood the test of time. My friends in Canada just redid their kitchen with them, and also were impressed by the quality. I’d just look into whether you want to use their installation service (or find your own independently), because our friends had a hell of a time putting it all together themselves. Of course, they tried to redo half their house at once, so they were already on the brink of insanity. “What not to do when purchasing your first home 101: Redoing the interior by yourself all at once”. Hahaha

I LOVE IKEA KITCHENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay so as an interior designer I think I’ve been taught to be morally opposed to Ikea (which I am not), but I put an Ikea kitchen into my old condo and I loved it. So unbelievably functional. I miss my Ikea kitchen SOOOOOO much. We’re doing a huge reno on our house and at the literal top of my “must have” list is an Ikea kitchen. I don’t care how much our house is worth when it’s all done, I’m not putting anything else in here. Our house now has some fancy schmancy kitchen and I freaking hate it. All the drawers are 2″ too shallow, organizational dividers don’t fit in anywhere. I hate it. I can hardly wait to rip the bloody thing out.

Words of advice: Pay Ikea to do the assembly and set up! Darling Husband and I did it ourselves and it took forever, LOL! Oh and get a countertop somewhere else. You can get great stuff for much better prices and waaaaaay more options than what they offer. Also, take advantage of their free in-store designers. You can try it yourself with the software you can download to your computer, but the kitchen designers there know how to mix and match different pieces from different lines far better than you will ever attempt to figure out at home. It’s worth the wait (or go first thing in the morning, sign up for an appointment, get a cheap breakfast in the cafeteria and come back).

ETA: Ikea also uses Blum hardware but under the “Ikea” name (or you’ll see on the hinges etc Blum for Ikea). Blum is manufactures high end hardware for hinges, soft close stoppers, full extensions, etc that you would get if you bought a really expensive custom kitchen. Bonus!

@bakerella: I seriously can’t wait to own a home and demolish the kitchen. So psyched. Definitely looking into IKEA, with all the good experiences i’ve heard about!

Ikea kitchens are great!!  But like everything there, i’d have them assemble everything and install, if you can!!

We bought our IKEA kitchen about 8 months ago, and love it! I think compared to other kitchens in the same price range from other stores the quality is very good, even better, and you have almost endless possibilities to put it together according to your needs and wishes.

Listen to @bakerella and pay IKEA to set it up!! It took us forever too, and i HATED hammering the backs.

However i disagree about the countertops. We were  totally amazed to see that the one we bought is even made in Germany, which often is a sign of good quality, and we expected it to be made in in China or Taiwan. It is very solid, even after i cut into it with a huge meat knife by mistake, so far there are absolutely no scratches or other damages.

As i said i love it, so this is a good opportunity to share a photo of at least one side of it  Laughing

Excuse the mess, but that´s just how we are ๐Ÿ˜‰

My mom redid her kitchen and ikea-ed the hell out of it.  It is AMAZING!  I’m actually obscenely jealous of her kitchen…she lived for 50 years before getting her dream kitchen, so I guess I can wait too, lol.  I’m actually going home this weekend, if I remember I’ll take pictures (my mom will be psyched that I wanna show off her kitchen, lol).
