I’ve been to Peoria (passing through), I live outside of Chicago.  My brother went to college there. It’s going to be much different then Detriot! But, I think it’s one of those areas that you can really enjoy and it’s only a couple of hours drive to Chicago to enjoy the city.  We offer so much in Chicago… restaurants, shows, the lake, nightlife… so much.  The last time I was in Peoria was a long time ago. Have you visited it?

I think Peoria will be fairly different from Detroit. It’s like 70% White, and 30% Black, and not much else, so I suppose whether or not it’s diverse depends on your point of view, but to me it was not very diverse (but I didn’t live there, I’m in Chicago and grew up in very diverse East Coast town, so I’m sure residents find connections I didn’t see and there must be social networks for connecting people).  I think economically it may be close to Detroit.  I seem to recall they had a zoo and a bunch of theaters, so they probably have a pretty good selection of ‘quality of living’ things for a small city.

@hopefloats:  I have heard that there is a good size Lebanese community in that area, I’m not sure whether it is composed of Christians or Muslims primarily though.  I know I saw at least one restaurant in the downtown area advertising halal meat.  I think as long as you’re in an academic type environment though even if the surrounding community tends to be more errrr small town mentality, that you should find more variety around you.  I would think it is a much smaller Muslim population out this way than in the Detroit suburbs but I think things would for the most part be fine. It obviously has less in terms of entertainment than a place like Detroit or Chicago, but I think that it is definitely not the worst lol.  I moved to Evanston (one town north of Chicago) after living in DC proper and growing up in the NYC-metro area, so I was worried about it being boring out here but it has definitely worked out way better than I thought. I get the feeling Peoria is probably similar, just a longer drive to the next big city, but any place with students will always have something around to keep them happy.

And congrats about being accepted into the nursing program!!!

Congrats on the nursing program! I lived in Bloomington for awhile, which is about 40 minutes east of Peoria.  I’ll just tell you that Central Illinois is not the most diverse place on the planet, but it’s okay.

It’s like any medium sized town – it has some stuff, but nothing I would note as special.  Though they do have the Peoria Chiefs, who are a minor league team for the Cubs.

If you are going to Bradley, it’s a really nice school.  I would say though, you aren’t close to major cities with major things to do.  There are things you can find to do, just like anywhere, but there isn’t always likely to be something going on.

Best of luck in your choices!

I live in the suburbs by Schaumburg! I’m not sure about that area though. I don’t like Illinois, but that’s because I’m from FL Tongue Out

The downtown area is pretty nice and has some nice restaurants and bars. I went to school near there and only visited a few times, but I liked. If you like to read, there’s a great little used book store on the main street 🙂
