@annifer:  The inserts are both disposable and biodegradable! So you’re being enviornmentally concious and you don’t have to deal with scraping off as much solid poop as you can or actually washing the inserts.

Here is my homemade diaper sprayer thing. I just clip the diaper in the clipboard thing and it keeps the poop and water from spraying anywhere other than the toilet!

Also, I thought I’d share a picture of her in my favorite gdiaper. So cute!

We use pocket diapers exclusively. Mostly bumGenius 4.0’s.

@BrandNewBride:  ah. Yeah, I know how they work…they haven’t gotten rave reviews from friends who have used them, but diapers fit each baby differently. Might be their kids just were lousy fit for the g dipes.

My son’s been on solids for a few months now and the poo really isn’t terrible. We use a mix of pockets, AIOs, and pre folds + covers. we love it.

After doing a bunch of research I decided to start with prefolds for the first little while.

This page explains some of the different types of diapers & other general info. I also found this review of 25 different styles & brands VERY helpful. I think I’m going to econobum all the way. 🙂

@Woodstock:  I know there are plenty of YouTube vids explaining the difference between diaper  types, but I found the cloth diapering store very useful for advising us on the particulars of each brand’s fit quirks (for example, some dipes say “one size” but they might work best on a 12lb + baby).

if you do facebook, there are lots of cloth diaper groups. I belong to one called Cloth Diaper Support Group, and those people are a wealth of knowledge.

I’m not sure yet if I’ll be cloth diapering, but based on what I’ve researched, for me personally I think I want to use almost exclusively prefolds and covers. I want to have more than one kid, and it seems like kinds like AIO’s and pockets are going to wear out a LOT faster b/c you have to wash the entire diaper every time. (instead of with covers you can usually get away with using the same covers for several changings.)

@red_rose:  I can see how you’d think that, but you’re actually still going to be washing each diaper or cover every 2-3 days. I have some covers and pockets/aios and they’re washed the same amount. I just have more pockets/aios to wash at one time.

LO is only 6 days old and too small to give a review of most of my stash.  Thus far I really like the Rumparoo’s lil’ Joey’s which are preemie AIOs but they make other sizes and have great reviews.  They take a long time to dry, but all AIO’s do-like 2 hours in the machine.  My friend got gdiapers said they were great but took nearly 3 hrs to dry in the machine.  I also use pre-folds and covers (Rumparoos) that just get wiped down- except when he gets shit on the velcro.  I use OsoCozy & Gerber prefolds for now and diaper liners (Bumkins) although his poops are kind of liquidy and it will be better when he’s a bit older/larger. OsoCozy‘s are much better.

I have other brands and I bought them all used, but haven’t used them including; Sunbabies, Alvas, Bumgenuis, and a few Babyland (cheapies they have not so good reviews.)  I paid $3-$10 each used and have 36 total (not incl. 18 prefold/2 covers- I bought those new from Amazon.)   All are one size, except Bumgenius which are XS.   For my pockets I have Alva inserts. Mix of snapsand velro and most are pockets.  I use Nellie’s detergant and have a wetbag Kanga on a hook in the nursery.

For me I bought used because this will be our only child and spending $20 per diaper (needing 30) for a kid’s shit seemed nuts.  If I did want a long term stash I would have bought all Rumparoos, Bumgenius or Thirsties.  I will likely donate mine once done, some have been used for 3 kids already.  I went with CD for affordability over long term use and bought most from friends of friends hence the random mix.

I spent about $275 on everything.

@aliciapdx:  yes to the kanga wetbag! That’s what we have in her room. It’s awesome.

Oh, and regarding detergent, you don’t have to use anything special, as long as it doesn’t have fabric softeners. Good old tide is the most recommended in the cloth diapering communities I’m a part of. I am using my grocery store’s free and clear and plan to use tide next since it is stronger – we are dealing with human waste!

On the topic of cleaning them, Nellie’s on Amazon works out to 16 cents a load, bac out could clean up anything and you use so little it is cheap and I stripped with RLR.  Not needed if you buy new, but I stripped all mine.  We have not needed to yet but rather than diaper sprayer we will use our shower sprayer into the toilet.

We are doing disposable when we go out , personally carrying poop in a wetbag for hours icks me out.  I bought just 1 pack in each size.

@red_rose:  The covers last me (total newbie) a full day until something gets on the velcro.  Still 8-10 changes over 1.
