I don’t mind my FI’s last name. It’s much easier to pronounce than mine, and I’ll be honest– I’ve always looked forward to taking my future husband’s last name some day! My issue is with my first name.
My parents gave me the shortened version of a longer name. It’s a single syllable, as is my FI’s (and my soon-to-be) last name. Saying the two names together sounds stacatto and is REALLY bugging me for some reason! I feel like the whole thing flows better if I use the lengthened version of my name, but that would mean I’d have to officially change it.
So Bees, is it worth the trouble? I feel like it could possibly hurt my parents’ feelings by not just dropping their last name, but the first name they gave me as well. What would you do? Has anyone else gone through this?

@JillyCheesesteak: I wouldn’t … People will still call you the name you have always been called.
I think your name is pretty(if it’s what it says in your user name without the y)
Unless it rhymes; i would not change it.

@Artificial-Sweetener: No rhyming, thank goodness. And wow, I totally forgot that my name was in my username and just spent a second trying to figure out how you knew it! I was like, “Holy crap, is she a psychic?!”
You’re right, those who know me in a personal or official capacity already call me by my actual name. I guess lengthening it wouldn’t change anything in that sense!

If you’ve gone by the shorterned version of your name your entire life, why change it now? People are still going to call you that! I don’t see much of a reason to change your name simply because “it sounds better”. Over time you’ll get used to your new name. =)

@JillyCheesesteak: Now if your name were Julie and his name were Gulia… I would so see an issue!! LOL.

@madteaparty: I honestly didn’t even think about it until a potential caterer brought it up. She was looking at our stuff and said, “Oh wow, your name will be super fast to say!” Once she planted that bomb in my head, I couldn’t unhear it. It’s been bugging me ever since. But you’re right, I’ll get used to it. =)

@Artificial-Sweetener: Haha! I can just hear Drew Barrymore saying that in the mirror. Probably one of my favorite scenes from that movie. Funny enough, my current last name is actually a decently popular first name. My brother happened to be dating a girl who had that first name (although spelled differently) and we used to tease her relentlessly about what would happen if she married him. They were pretty much doomed from the start though.

lol this is a cute thread.
I wouldn’t change it because I don’t think it will impact your life much unless you want people to start calling you a lengthened name…
My given name is Kimberly and my nickname is Kimmy but people who don’t know me call me Kim and its not my favorite… I sign things Kimberly like official documents & etc so if you lke the way it looks on paper and want to do that, I think you could.
But yeah, I think its a lot of effort to get everyone else to start calling you something new.
ALSO,
keep in mind that very few people will be calling you by your first name AND last name at the same time… family won’t, friends won’t, you won’t hear it that often anway.

@JillyCheesesteak: This is kind of off-topic, OP, but I’ve always wanted to name my daughter the longer version of your name (your name as a nickname)… I think it’s beautiful! Unfortunately, DH’s last name puts it in the ‘Julia Gulia’ category. SO SAD!

@KimmySumShuga: Great points! I guess being a Jill instead of a Jillian doesn’t make a difference anywhere but my brain, and my brain’s just going to have to get used to it. =)

@brighteyedgirl: Aww, man! It’s a shame there aren’t many variations of it, I’d love to have some alternative suggestions!

@JillyCheesesteak: I understand your dilemma!
My name is Alex, but my real name is Alexandra. I’ve always wanted to be called Alexandra, but no one has ever called me that– just Alex
I have a single syllable last name now (like Alex Smith), but my Fiance has a very long double-syllable name (like Smithson), and I think it would sound way better to be Alexandra Smithson rather than Alex Smithson!
Unfortunately, I don’t think people are going to start calling me Alexandra anytime soon.
