I have done what your not meant to do and fallen in love with a dress WAY outside of my price range… Vera Wang Ethel is the style which I have fallen for.
I am very tempted to buy a china made copy- I figure I can stand to loose $400 rolling the dice.
But I’m also curious if any brides here have bought one online? Any information would be great.
Otherwise I am also interested to know if anyone is planning on selling their’s after the big day- I am a size 0-2 and could probably get a larger size and have it taken in.
I don’t want to spend more the $2k (which is very very optimistic of me) I also have been told I might have to pay duty and GST (australian taxes) even if I buy this second hand so that’s why I can’t spend to much. To buy the dress in Australia is crazy expensive.
can’t wait to hear from you all.

Vera Wang is now doing an inexpensive line called Vera Wang white for the retail chain David’s Bridal in the US. There are a couple styles similar to Ethel, you may want to check it out:
Here are a few used ones for sale. They’re slightly above your price range though. I sold a dress to a bride in Hong Kong before and shipping+customs came to $300. I don’t know if the buyer had to pay taxes on top of that.

@Alice0183:Hi–I love both the Vera Wang Ethel and Farrah but can’t afford the cost. Like you, I saw them way discounted if made in China. If you decide to buy, please let me know if how the copied version of Ethel works out! Also, have you thought about having a (local) tailor work with you to reproduce the gown–I’ve heard that can also be much cheaper than purchasing the brandname.

i am also totally in love with the ethel. i either plan on spending the money to buy this gorgeous dress (im also in australia but would buy from a US boutique that will send it to me) or getting it made replica.
i have also thought about buying a replica from china and they are cheap, a recommendation would be useful. i have also found this online store in Texas called lilys bridal online (or similar) that made the replicas but in quality materials. i was quoted about $1500 to make the ethel. check her out, it might be another option. but make sure you have tried on similar so you dont mind spending the money.
when i was emailing her for quotes (sending through pictures on what i wanted) i asked her to send me a picture of the VW Diana dress they have made, and it was pretty perfect to the original.
hope that helps

Buy it used and resell it when you’ve had your day. I got my $7.5K dream dress, in all of its dreamy fabric and craftsmanship glory for about $1K including alterations. If anyone could knock off that fabric, my had is off to them, but I wouldn’t count on it. I’d rather have my memories and pictures than a not-quite-right dress to keep in the closet forever.

So I bought the Chinese Replica!
I wanted to do the pre used dress but buying it from Australia actually meant that I would have to pay insurance, duty tax and GST which would have made the dress cost ALOT more then the preused price.
I found a dress maker I liked and crossed my fingers for the best possible out come. I read this site and took some pointers from other bee’s on how to deal with the purchase eg to keep constant contact to make sure they knew I was aware of the deadline, to be willing to accept it would be later then what they said and to have faith.
the dress turned up yesterday- it looks great- is it the exact same- no way- is it getting close YES. I am yet to try it on but I am willing to give more info and post some photos tomorrow night 🙂 so watch this space!!!

so here are the pictures.
I think the bottom is a different- it is not big flares but instead more roses style flares.. Sorry my pic is a bit poor since I took it standing on my bed with an iphone 🙂
but I want to say- WOW can you believe that for $400 I got a dress made to measure- the bow, the detail at the top, the fact it come with a built in bra, that I asked her to make fabric covered buttons for the back and she did for no extra cost, the fabric is a much better quality then I thought it would be. I guess the only thing is that the bottom flares are not really what I thought but aren’t bad
It did come with a tiny red mark on one of the flares but I can only see it if I really look and I plan to get it fully cleaned. It came in a tiny post bag so it needs a good steam to look it’s best. so far everyone that has seen it can not believe that it only cost me $400.
I used blingdress with Grace. I had read a bad review here but I want to give her a good review. I have a dress that is very close to what I wanted (since the dress I wanted would have costed me $6k and this one cost $400 I think that’s beyond amazing).
My advice is your asking for a replica- its not the real thing so it might be a little different. For $400 I have a dress which is a great to wear straight up or if I choose I can now take it to a dress maker and have it altered to be even closer.
Please let me know if you have any questions or what Grace’s contact. I found her on recycle bride- oh and the postage was included in the $400.

Very nice!!! This is a unique style and they did a great job of recreating it in a classy way. Its really difficult to recreate the skirt, so I have heard. So thumbs up for blingdress.

I wanted to give an update on this incase anyone came to find a review on this dress or getting a replica. I am currently working with a dress maker to change the bottom.
She actually made the point that there was no way I could have got this dress made in Australia for the money I paid and that made me feel good. I think the top is bang on what I want and I’m working with her to get the bottom right- she has taklen off the two side rosettes as I feel they don’t flare out the way the Ethel does and she had pinned in the sides to made it a bit tighter on the bottom. Then she is redoing the sides where the rosettes have come off to sort of flare down, then she is adding a small train to give it a little drama.
Hope this helps

@Alice0183: What was the website? I am also obsessed with this dress and can’t afford it!!

i think your seamstress did a great job on the top. the bottom looks nice but i think each swirl is a bit wider than vera’s version. i believe there are 6-8 sets of the swirls (i tried counting them but I didn’t want to take the dress out of the bag.) and they’re not exactly rosettes. i don’t know how to describe them. they’re swirls but not full swirls — the bottom is flat and open and the swirls are layered pieces of raw edge cut organza. i think it looks fine the way it is but if she’s going to fix them, maybe she can take the edging off the organza.
it definitely reminds me of the ethel.

This is the finished product- it’s not quite the Vera I fell in love with but it is something I am happy with,’
I hope this is helpful for anyone wanting to go down this path.
