Is there are particular reason that this has to be your “forever” home?  I would not be able to handle that either, just not for me.  It was one of the things that Darling Husband was well aware of, I AM building my dream home and will not settle.

I understand.  While I feel really strongly about living small and am proud that I have made my 785 square foot condo into a home, there are times when I’m jealous of the high ceilings, mantles, and great rooms that friends have.

I have found that the best way to make myself feel better about my environment is to paint.  I can of paint is only $30-40 and it can totally transform a room.  Don’t talk about it, do it.  You can paint a room in one day.  Spending $30 to paint a room that you might one day renovate doesn’t seem like a total waste.  Neither does hanging some art.

If I moved into my MIL’s house, I’d repaint every single surface. The master bedroom would be the first room I’d do.  Change the carpet, too (or get an inexpensive, sisel rug to go on top of whatever is currently there.  That should be your room.  Your Darling Husband should make it off limits.

Consider the fact that your older house probably has more charm and your cousins might not have all that much left over to decorate that new home for a while.

I’m a little jealous of you! We are actually living *with* the IL’s in their house because I lost my job and FI’s income wasn’t enough to support us all (we have 3 children.) Once we get back on our feet, I’m afraid all that we’ll be able to afford is a crummy little apartment. Fiance wants a house so bad, but we just can’t swing it. So, don’t feel TOO bad about where you are! 🙂

I would be happy with any house at all.

@CherryWaves: Thanks! I don’t blame you, though. If we got this house while they moved to a newer one, I’d be a little peeved too! 🙂
