Carrie: Why’d you get a black diamond?
Big: Because you’re not like everyone else.
~ Sex and the City 2
Ever since I saw the second Sex and the City movie, I have been absolutely OBSESSED with black diamonds! Actually up until I saw the movie I didn’t even think they existed. I knew that yellow diamonds existed, and blue diamonds, and pink diamonds, and so on and so forth but for some reason it didn’t hit me that black diamonds could exist. When the infamous Mister Big pulled out the little box with the black diamond ring inside of it I remember going back to that part at least ten times just to catch a glimpse of it. I was completely mesmerized! So I decided to do some research on my own, but I tried not to get my hopes up too high because I figured that black diamonds were an expensive luxury, but just out of curiousity I wanted to find out for myself.
To my surprise I found that black diamonds were actually a whole lot cheaper than white diamonds. I must have looked at over 100 pictures of black diamond E-Rings and the more I looked the more I found that I WANTED a black diamond in my E-Ring. One night over dinner I brought it up to my SO.
“What would you say if I told you that I wanted a black diamond put into my engagement ring?”
He didn’t seem too phased by the question and he asked me if such a thing even existed. I told him that it did and I showed him a few pictures of black diamond engagement rings. He seemed fairly on board with the idea and said that if it was something that I liked then I should go ahead and see if it was possible to have a black diamond put into the E-Ring that I chose. I took up the conversation with my mom and my grandmother who were both a little worried that I wanted a black diamond. Black has always been my favorite color and they never liked that trait about me so when I mentioned black diamonds they weren’t all too happy about it. Nevertheless, I contacted my jeweler and asked her about black diamonds and here is what she told me…
Black diamonds are actually white diamonds that cannot be cleaned and passed off as white diamonds so they’re processed in factories and painted black, but that doesn’t make them any less of a diamond. They’re just…different and obviously a lot less expensive than white diamonds. That only meant that I would be able to get a fairly large sized rock put into my ring without asking my SO to pay an arm and a leg for it. My jeweler then said that if I was interested in having a black diamond put into the ring, she could do some research and see if she could obtain a black diamond from one of their diamond dealers and bring it to me so that I could take a look at it before making my final decision. I told her to go ahead and see if she could find a black diamond for me.
The next day she emailed me with the picture of the black diamond that she found and the price for it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the price of the diamond was too good to be true, but I still wanted to take a look at it before making that oh so important decision. The jeweler brought the diamond home and allowed me to pick it up and take it with my for the evening so that I could show my family and my SO and see if they were on board with it. Luckily, everyone seemed to like the way the black diamond looked, and as for myself the more I looked at it the more I fell in love with it. I didn’t think of it was a flawed diamondat all, I was content with the fact that it was just different but that didn’t make it any less beautiful to me.
Here she is. This is a 1.91CT black diamond. The picture really doesn’t do her justice though.
So after more careful consideration, we decided to go with the black diamond. It is different but then again so am I. I definitely never imagined myself to be a traditional bride, not in every aspect at least. I was absolutely ecstatic! But what happened next was something that I DEFINITELY was no expecting. On Tuesday (July 30, 2013) SO and I had planned a date night, but before that was to commence we needed to drop off the diamond back to the jewelers house with our decision. I knew that he had called her a few days before just to find out some information but I had no idea what they had talked about. So there we were sitting in her living room talking about the ring and she reveals that they had talked about pricing when SO had called her and she explained that he needed to put down a deposit for the ring and pay for the diamond itself and pay off the rest when the ring was finished. I wasn’t expecting him to buy the ring right then and there because there were still certain matters that we needed to discuss so I was trying not to get my hopes up. The jeweler then asked if it would be possible for him to get the needed payments to her by the end of the week. I looked over at him curiously because I had absolutely no idea what was going on and then he said…
“Can I pay for it now? I brought my checkbook…”
Yeah, I was just about ready to FAINT! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. We went from needing to discuss certain aspects of our relationship to him purchasing my engagment ring!!! When we left the jeweler’s house I was on cloud nine. Not only was I getting the man of my dreams but I was getting the ring of my dreams. A timeless yet modern with a twsit engagment ring that I absoluetely cannot wait to wear!!! Though I know what my ring will look like for the most part, when I saw the sample it had a white diamond in it so I know that it will look completely different with a black diamond so I don’t think that I’m missing out on the surprise factor at all.
We were told that the ring would take about to 4 weeks to make so now the waiting process begins. I really hope that SO doesn’t wait too long to pop the question 😉
