But at the reception, I plan on taking them off and wearing flip flops. I do not want to have my dress hemmed to fit the flips so are there any suggestions out there about what to do about not tripping over my dress? Or is just hiking it up and dancing all night my only option??

@Mrs.DsBeeloved: I had 5 inch heels and took them off as fast as I could at the reception… and it was not easy to move around in my gown with all the extra length, even bustled. I had to hike my the skirts up with my elbows sticking out and even then it was it hard to grab all the material! My dress was pretty full, so maybe it depends on the actual weight of your skirt, but I wish I had it to do over, I wouldn’t have gone with the heels (super tall groom and all). Maybe you could find a wedge sandal to take up some the height? I’ve seen wedges made from the same material as flip-flops…

I also wore 4.5 inch heels I lOVED them… but I brought a back up flat just in case at the reception. I swore to myself I was going to wear them the whole night… I got pretty far but couldn’t take it … and put on my back ups the last 2 hours of the night… My feet felt wonderful.. but my dress hemming at the bottom got stepped on and the lining was ripped… I did the hike up trick… im sure it could be fixed but.. it’s not like Ill be wearing it anytime soon….
My toes were numb the whole honeymoon though… lol

I’m wearing huge heels too- but I’ll be keeping mine on all night 🙂 I run around in 4-6 inch heels for work every day, so it’s not a huge stretch for me to be in high heels all night for the wedding.
Could you consider some platform flip flops to take off some of the height? 5″ probably isn’t practical, but some solid 3-inchers should take the worst of it off… Something like these:
Or even these, maybe you could find something similar in white?
