hi all!! i posted on the January babies board so i will update here as well! thanks for keeping me company 🙂
7:30am- i went in for my appt at my OB and was 2cm, 80% effaced, and -1 station. he stripped my membranes again and i lost my mucous plug. i also scheduled an US for thursday to check on the babe
i worked all day and came home.
9:00pm- bloody show
10:45pm- my contractions started and they were about 10-12 minutes apart lasting 60-90 seconds and all in my back. i managed to fall asleep.
2:30am- contractions 9-10 minutes apart lasting 60-90 seconds
4:45am- more mucous plug and contractions 7-8 minutes apart lasting 60 seconds. i finally woke up DH thinking “okay this is the real thing”
7:00am- i called into work and we ate some breakfast and went for a walk around the neighborhood with my dogs- surprisingingly my contractions slowed down at this point and i managed to get some sleep when we got back from our walk
10:15am- i wake up with a few contractions (still in my back) and decide i need to get up and moving around
all afternoon i bounced on my yoga ball and used my breastpump for some nipple stimulation hoping to get things going again.
3:15pm- contractions are back to 7-8 minutes apart lasting 60-90 seconds long
we ate dinner… my contractions were pretty steady so i took a bath and just tried to relax
8:15pm- my water broke- holy shit. it happened when i was on my hands and knees during a contraction in bed… and i knew it right away! almost immediately my contractions were coming strong and 2-3 minutes apart and 60-90 seconds long. i freaked out and told DH we better get going for the hospital since they were so close together.
10pm- we arrived at labor and delivery and we got to a room so i could be checked. they checked that my water had indeed broken and then they told me i was 3cm dilated. talk about a let down. i wad expecting wayyyy more since my contractions were so close together and i was in so much pain from the back labor. they made me lay in bed to be monitored and get the baby’s and my heartrate. i knew immediately that i could not labor on my back. i had to be up and moving to relieve the pressure on my back. they of course asked me if i wanted an epidural and i declined. i got a saline lock. i also did not sign any of the epidural paperwork because i had my mind made up that i was going to have a natural childbirth.
they admitted me and i was so relieved to have a “tub room” to labor in (they only have two and they are first come first serve)
this is where things get fuzzy since i was in alot of pain and no one was really keeping track of the time… i labored in and out of the tub and the shower. at some point the nurse brought me a birthing ball so i could bounce and roll… that felt pretty good.
4am- i was making extremely slow progress and i was only to 5cm. i declined alot of my cervical checks because i was getting discouraged and it was so painful to lay on my back i decided against it. by this point my mom was also in the room with DH and i because i was needing contant pressure on my back to relieve the pain. the baby was “sunny side up” which was causing the back labor and the slow progress since he was not moving into the birth canal and putting pressure on my cervix as he should have.
7am- 7cm – again i wanted to cry but i was not giving up…. i was on my third set of nurses at this point and they were great and respected my wished for a natural birth. my mom and DH were still putting pressure on my back and that was the only thing keeping me going… i was still in and out of the tub and shower. they also gave me stadol to take the edge off but it just ended knocking me out for about 45 minutes.
9am- 9cm… yes! i am thinking “okay! this is it! i am in transition! its almost over!”
NOT…. this baby did not want to come out. the nurses suggested i try to sit backwards on the toilet with my legs spread open and leaning forward to try and get him to turn the correct way… we also tried the hands and knees approach. nothing was working. he would not turn and i was in so much pain and so exhausted after almost 36 hours of hard labor that i knew i could not push.
11am- this is when i knew i couldnt keep doing this… i was still 9cm and i was so tense that the baby couldnt turn around and couldnt move down. the pain in my back was unbearable and i decided at this point to get an epidural in hopes that the baby would turn… i was trying to avoid a c-section at this point. of course i hadnt signed any of the epidural paperwork because i just knew i wasnt going to need one… lol…. oooppppsss.
12pm- still 9cm nad having bacl labor sooooo i got the epidural and sweet sweet relief. thank god. the anesthisiologist commented that he has never seen a woman at 9cm hold so still.. so i felt good about that. 🙂 my whole body relaxed and the baby turned himself within about 30 minutes. i asked the nurse to turn down the epi because i was afraid i wouldnt be able to push when the time came since i was so numb.
i am disappointed that i had to get the epi, but i dont regret it. it helped him turn and he needed to do that so i could deliver him
1pm- i feel the urge to push and a ton of pressure- i was 10cm and he was crowning by himself with each contraction. the nurse had to hold his head in while we waited on the doctor to come deliver him.
Silas Daniel Aldridge was born at 1:37pm (8lbs 2 oz and 20 inches long)- he opened his eyes and cried right away and latched on great.
OMG!!!! what an update! CONGRATS!!!!!
Aww, congrats! Man, I feel ya on the long labor with back pain. I was in active labor for about 30 hrs before getting an epidural… I needed counter pressure on my back the whole time too. I was 4cm when I got the epidural and 7cm less than 30 min later. I’m thinking the epidural allowed my baby to turn as well. Sounds like you made the right decision. Congrats on your son!
congratulations! what a trooper. women are really amazing. welcome to the world little one.
