What was decided before he moved in?

Wait, I’m confused! So he’s staying at his parents to save money, but he’s paying their mortgage? Is he saving any money by living there?

I’m confused too as to why he’s paying if they knew he was moving back in to save money (did they know?).  Also, how old is he? I’ve noticed parents tend to want more responsibility the older their child is and if they spent time in school instead of being established in the workplace.  I know there’s the argument that it shouldn’t matter but to some parents it does.

My husband is the primary on the mortgage for his parents second vacation home.  It’s a $550K mortgage that they couldn’t qualify for.  He also helps pay a very large portion of it.  I totally understand your frustration.  This has virtually ruined the relationship between myself and the in-laws because I simply cannot understand why they would do this to him.  This has literally torn the family apart.

I’m a little confused, but it does sound like they are using him.

this sucks…  I don’t know what your belief system is but…

and if he is at your house most of the time anyhow, what about him coming to stay with you?  with both of your incomes you could save a good chunk of change.  Their WHOLE mortgage, really?  I don’t get it?

What were they doing before he moved in?

How did the conversation go the first time he wrote a check?  I have to imagine that you have been left out of the details about the communication between your Fiance and his family.  I don’t understand how this could have started!

@Williams_delores: totally understand and in the same boat… there probably was no miscommunication like others are suggesting.  When my FIL’s get their bills that can’t be paid… they end up in our mailbox.  WE’RE IN COLLEGE!!!!!!!  WE CAN’T AFFORD YOUR BILLS TOO!!  But for some reason since we work really hard and go to a prestigious college… we’re also entitled (ahem… somehow required) to make sure their bills are paid every month.  WTF?!  I’m going to college to pay my bills… not yours.

I cannot even imagine being put in that situation!!! I would tell him something needs to be done soon before it puts a rut in the family…if his name is not on that mortgage he is in no way obligated to pay it!  He could pay a portion like it was “rent”.
