In lieu of favors, I was thinking about making a donation on behalf my guests to the American Cancer Society ( my parents both dief from cancer and so did members of his family ). How do I make people aware of that at the reception without it becoming a downer ?

At my husband’s cousin’s wedding she had a sign up that said “In lieu of favors, a donation has been made to the Breast Cancer foundation in honor of the bride’s aunt, [aunt’s name]”. You could probably also put “in memory of” instead of “in honor of” and could also put a picture beside the sign of you and your parents as well as pictures of the members from his family.

We are planning on putting out easels with a posterboard telling our stories with some photos since we picked charities that have a lot of meaning to us. We plan to have them out next to the escort cards so between cocktail hour and going in to the ballroom people can read them.
I did look for something to small to give with a note at the table. A friend had sticker/embroidered teal ribbons for Lymphoma Awareness that all the guests wore. But I felt the signs eliminated the need to make 180 of something so bonus for me!
