wlphilli:  Does your company have an internet policy? Is there clear guidance to employees re what is and is not aceptable browsing?  Do they define “excessive”?

If not, perhaps you could voluneer to help draft a policy.

Where I work, we are enouraged to browse acceptable sites on the net when we are not busy. It keeps our mind alert and active. Some employees bring their own tablets or laptops for personal browsing.

From now on, don’t download files to the company computer.

wlphilli: I am quite sure your rapport is not ruined. A lot depends on where you go from here and how you behave. I assume you have already apologized.

Did you speak up and say you were not aware that what you were doing was not acceptable? If you were not aware, I am sure that others are also surfing the net.

I would still suggest you offer to help draft a policy as your browsing had nothing to do with other employment, and yet it drew this reaction from HR.

wlphilli:  I had something kind of like that happen to me.  I freaked out a few weeks ago after coming back to work after my wedding.  Before leaving for my wedding, my computer at work wasn’t pulling up Excel attachments that were in emails. I left it as is and thought maybe it would fix itself by the time I got back.  Well, I came back to work and it still wasn’t pulling up any excel attachments.  I called IT to have them fix it and I was hoping they had a quick fix like something needed to be checked or something, but they couldn’t figure it out.  They put in a ticket and the main IT person remotely went into my computer and tried to clean it out.  He kept saying wow and that I had a lot of temporary internet files.  I immediately started getting really hot and was worried that he was going to report me to HR for using the internet a lot.  I guess I had so many files and he apparently saw some issues that he thought it was best to change out the hard drive.  I freaked out even more, because I thought they would be able to see more once they took my hard drive.  I didn’t go on anything bad, just pinterest and online stores, but I thought they would see how much I was on it.

Before getting off the phone with IT, he told me to just stop the cleaning program and he would be out the next day to swap hard drives.  When I got off the phone I was playing around with excel to see if I could fix it myself one last time, and I did.  I immediately emailed him saying that it was fixed and I no longer needed the hard drive.  He called me back saying that he thought it was still best to change out the hard drive, but if I didn’t want to I didn’t have to change it out.  I just said ok because I didn’t want it to seem like I was hiding something, but after 30 minutes I emailed him back and said that I had a lot of catching up to do from coming back from a 2 week vacation that i didn’t think it was best the change out the hard drive.  He said ok and to let him know when I was ready.  I was still freaking out after that.  For days I was wondering if I was going to get a call from HR.  I haven’t gotten a call so far (knock on wood…).  Since then I haven’t used the internet for anything!

Oh don’t worry about it. I thought you had been caught doing coke in the bathroom or something. You’ll bounce back from this in no time. Just be on yours best internet behaviour for a while.

I think time will help people forget – especially as your contributions/achievements continue to build up, pushing this to the back of people’s minds.

I would just try to become more involved in whatever areas your company could benefit from. It would show that you’re keeping yourself busy, so you don’t have as much time to browse anyway. That way, if this ever comes up again, you can show how you clearly rectified the situation and did not repeat the same mistake.

I pretty much burnt my career to the ground about 5 years ago. Ugh. Horrible, I did horrible things.

This is minor compared to what I did to myself. Just dust yourself off and move on. Don’t do anymore browsing. You can still ask for your promotion, just maybe wait a little longer and put in some stellar work inbetween time.

wlphilli:  If it makes you feel any better, I know someone who was fired for looking at porn- in his office, on his work computer, during business hours!

Just a bit of advice from my past experience.

I was in first job out of school and had been there two years, I was 18. One day I went to work and in the morning I used “Myspace” before I started (which I had done for the last 2 years – Start time was 8 am and I was usually at work at 7.30, ate breaky and used the Internet till 8am). At around 11 that day i was called in and got a written warning for using too much internet for personal use.

The next day they met me at the front door, Gave me my termination letter and escorted me to collect my personal belongings because I had used it the day I got the warning.
