None. People will buy you clothes over essentials.

@SFreeman2187:  And people like buying the stuff for newborns more than for babies who are a couple months…

Are you having a baby shower? You may not need to buy baby clothes. I know women who got a closet full of newborn and infant clothing as gifts and as hand-me-downs from mothers with older children.

When are you due? I’d wait until you have a good idea what size your baby will be at full term. He might skip 0-3 outright or he may be in 0-3 clothing for 6 months.

Honestly if you are going to buy baby clothes buy bigger for down the road.  As PP mentioned if you are having a shower more than likely you will get baby clothes for now.

Though from my own experience, since my munchkin was 7 weeks early I ended up having to puchase premie, newborn clothes due to we had figured on having a big baby just from the pure fact Darling Husband and his own dad were big babies.

@TurtleDoves:  just fyi – my BFF and SIL both just had babies – and they had very little as far as newborn/0-3 clothing……….because EVERYBODY assumed everyone else was getting them newborn stuff (including me!) so everyone ended up purchasing them 3 months+ clothing!

I would honestly buy the larger sizes from 12 and up. Mostly people will give you 0-6 months. But don;t forget about when they get older. I was lucky and had friends and family who had recently had children so we were given all sizes. From the showers I received mostly 0-6 month and maybe a few outfits for when he got older.

For perspective…DS is 6 months old and wearing 6-12 month now depending on how it is cut.

@TurtleDoves:  I would just wait. I used to work in a Macy’s kids department and that clothing is on sale ALL THE TIME. You can get layette clothing for like 75% or more off all year round. You don’t need to jump on the great sales you see now. They’ll be another one in 2 or 3 days in perpetuity. I know you’re excited (how could you not be!!!), but you really should wait.

@hisgoosiegirl:  totally happened to me too! I had to buy a ton of 0-3 and newborn sleepers because everything I got was 6months + (and strangely out of season, too… hmm.. lol)

personally, I would buy essentials. a few sleep sacks, a few footie pjs, a few newborn outfits (also, my 8lb 2oz son fit BabyGap’s ‘up to 7lbs’ until he was almost 2 months old). Keep your receipts and see what you get. Before the baby is born cut the tags and wash one of each, I brought 3 different outfits to the hopital and only one fit, the smallest one.
