@airmail:  First, thank you!! We’re VERY excited about this wedding 🙂

And yes; it was 50% deposit for the space, ceremony fee and bar minimum.  Our caterer only charged a $1500 deposit but our food ended up costing 4x that.

Yikes! And I thought our 1/3 deposit of the estimated total was bad. $30k does seem like a HUGE amount of money for a deposit but I guess the PP’s are right. If they want 50% upfront and your venue budget is already so high, it seems about right.

Just out of curiousity, are you saying that your catering cost alone will be $60k for 55 people? That’s over $1k per person! Are you feeding these people gold encrusted duck or something?!

@Broken Biscuit:  You can’t upload pics from the iPad unless you already have them saved in your album on WB.

wow!  Our total venue, with open bar, tables, upgraded linens and about 130 guest is a total of $20k.  And that is in the DC area as well.  My deposit was only $2K

Am I doing the math on this right?

55 people

$60k catering
$11k site fee
_______
$71k total (not even contemplating the security fee)

so that’s $1,290 a person???

I know you mentioned it includes several things, but I don’t believe it included:
Music (Band/DJ)
Florist
Photog
Videog

Those can easily add on an additional $20k!!!

I live in an expenseive area too and this seems crazy!!

Wow, good gosh darn, that’s a lot of money.  It is your wallet, so if you love the place and you have the money… but I would be looking elsewhere. LOL.

My venue to rent the space, table and chairs included was about $200 deposit for 150 people.  I only paid $100 deposit though. 🙂

Another all inclusive venue we looked at was only $500 to reserve the date.  They ask for half the total 3 months before the wedding and then the rest and final payment 8 days prior.  Just cannot see how someone can afford to pay that much up front…it’s insane.  I would try and negotiate with them, see if you can get them to lower the deposit if you put down $15000 in cash.

I totally didn’t see your first post that you live in a major metro area. That makes sense, then. I’m glad I DON’T live in one of those areas; I’ve had friends who recently got married in major metro areas who had to spend a lot for a little/DIY a lot because of the costs.
