So next week I’m heading off to New York and thought I would start looking for my wedding lengha – but I have no idea which stores to look at.
I have a small list of places that had good reviews online; Bombay Bridal Boutique and India Saree Palace in Jackson Heights. I’m also going to take a look at Shehnaai mainly for fun – maybe I’ll get lucky and find something in my price range!
Anyone know of other stores I should take a look at in NY?

I don’t know specific shops, but I would definitely suggest blocking a big chunk of time to just wander around in Jackson Heights. So many shops there. I’ve never been to India, and it’s high on my list of places to visit. So when I’m jonesing real bad for a trip & can’t take one, I go to Jackson Heights and pretend. 😉

Unfortunetly, I only have 10 days in New York and some of that time will be spent with relatives in NY. So it’s best I stick to a few shops even though I’d love to wander into every store!
I’ve only been to India once (Delhi and Agra) and I went in the middle of summer (not a good time to go!), but I still loved it. Its a very beautiful and diverse country. Next time I’ve got to go on a tour so I can see more places!

I MOC’d an Indian wedding last year. Let me check my files & see if I have info re: where the bride got her lengha. 🙂
Enjoy your trip out here & pack for every type of weather… it’s been fluctuating between 50’s and 30’s, sun, rain and snow… Ugh.

OK, my bride from last year got her lengha in NJ – it’s about an hour’s drive from midtown NYC. There’s also a train station that would get you close. They also have a location out on Long Island that may be accessible via rail.

Thanks Miss Meepsie!
If I don’t find anything in NY I plan on making a day trip to NJ. I still have plenty of time to get a dress, we haven’t even set a date – though I’m hoping for 1/1/2011.
Great, I love unpredictable wheather, LOL! Thanks for the heads up!

I would try to make a stop at Payal Singhal in Manhattan.
Also in Manhattan at Wedding Cafe is Attache Couture by appt only. http://www.attachecouture.com/indexflash.html
In Jackson Heights, check out Piran Fashions. (but do haggle the price…they jack up the prices.)

I got mine at Shennai USA in New York. It was amazing. They work directly with designers in India. Their outfits were much nicer than most of what I’ve been seeing in Edison.

I can’t specifically tell you where to go, but I can tell you where NOT to go. I got my wedding dress made from Charms Couture in Long Island, NY–owner is Madhu Ahuja. DO NOT EVER GO THERE. The owner actually has a boutique now in floral park and for the six months that I gave my dress order, she had me chasing her. She went completely MIA in the middle for two months and came back stating that she had been in India. I let it go because I had already given her the deposit. I wanted to customize a dress. She told me to contact the lady in india that was doing the embroidery on the dress correctly to make sure it came out as I wanted. I did so. I stayed in touch wtih that lady for three months working on my dress. The owner did not once get in touch with me to follow up on anything, including making the sure the dress was being made according to the budget i gave. The dress was finally finished adn the owner now decided to finally email me anything regarding it and it was a price that was 35% higher than what we had initially agreed upon. Nothing else was in the email. She wouldnt give the lady in india an address to send the dress to. I had to chase her again. Had to make so many phone calls.. iw as completely stressed out–this is not even mentioning that i suffered a death in the family around this time–thsi lady caused me so much unnecessary stress which could’ve been avoided had she just acted like a professional. I woudl call her, she wouldnt pick up, but she would text me back. When my sister called her at the same time from a number she did not know, she finally picked up once, but never after that. My dress finally came a week before my wedding. She wouldnt budge on the price although there were no changes made–she knew my wedding was a week later. She did not offer to fix the size on teh dress (even though she said not to worry about losign weight when we initially placed the order because there is always a final fitting with the dress). I have a dress now that i paid 3 grand for and that does not fit me. She told me she doesnt have the time to take a hundred phone calls from her customers –well, you disgusting piece of shit, maybe if you answered your customer’s calls, they wouldn’t have to call you a hundred times. And mind you all, my weddign is next week. DO NOT. I mean DO NOT GO TO THIS WOMAN. She has no heart. She will not provide you any service and will rip you off clean. I should’ve punched her.
