Here are some we were looking at:
Love it All – The Kooks (I love this song!)
Only You – Joshua Radin
You are the Best Thing – Ray LaMontagna
And I love Love and Some Verses by Iron and Wine and Gracie by Ben Folds but not for the first dance

Heh, I was discussing this topic with an indie-loving friend of mine, how there is hardly any happy-in-love music by indie bands. Really makes you realize what depressing stuff we’re listening to most of the time!
A few gems I’ve culled:
Ben Folds, The Luckiest
Basia Bulat, Oh My Darling
Belle and Sebastian, Funny Little Frog
Blitzen Trapper, Furr
Calexico and Iron and Wine, Sixteen Maybe Less (Okay, I wouldn’t do this for a first dance since it’s about an old married man reminiscing about a teenage fling who is NOT his wife, but it’s still very sweet)
David Bowie, Moonage Daydream (…what? Okay, maybe that’s just Fiance and me π )
Swell Season, Falling Slowly
Practically anything by Joshua Radin
The Little Ones, Morning Tide
Kevin Devine, Just Stay
Michael Franti, Say Hey (I Love You)
Old Crow Medicine Show, Wagon Wheel
Patty Griffin, Heavenly Day
Stars, Ageless Beauty
Van Morrison, Into the Mystic (also Crazy Love and These Dreams of You)

I think Such Great Heights would be really good for a first dance. Or Death Cab’s Soul Meets Body. Or not sure if this is very indie but Adele’s version of Just To Feel Your Love is beautiful. Good luck!

There are some amazing suggestions on here, so I won’t repeat, but I don’t think anyone mentioned Ben Fold’s The Luckiest – that’s a great one!

Yeah, honestly I made the decision early on to not care about lyrics at all when it came to our wedding music. I mean, really, the songs aren’t about you so what does it matter? We chose songs based on mood, melody, and how they make us feel when we listen to them. We got no complaints about our selections. π

this verges on pop…………… but our song is hero/heroine by boys like girls………… so as cheesy as that is, we will probably dance to that

How about “That teenage feeling” by Neko Case, “Love and Some Verses” by Iron & Wine, “Love Like Laughter” by Beth Orton – although it’s tough cuz the lyrics are more complex in most indie songs vs pop songs. I also love “ice cream” by Sarah McLachlan, although I don’t think she qualifies as indie π Let us know what you come up with!

I love this post. We are NOT Top 40 people at all so choosing the ceremony music has been a challenge! This will most likely change, but here is the current line-up for the Ceremony/Reception music (and you’ll see it’s full of some indie faves):
Processional (parents/grandparents): ‘How Deep Is Your Love’- Bird and the Bee
Bridal Party: ‘On Your Side’- Pete Yorn
Bride & Dad walk down the aisle: ‘Honey and the Moon’- Joseph Arthur
Recessional: ‘Walking On A Dream’- Empire of the Sun
First Dance: ‘Fade Into You’- Mazzy Star
Cake Cutting- ‘Ice Cream’- Sarah McLachlan
Last Dance- ‘After Hours’- We Are Scientists
Yea, there are some holes to fill… but the music is being worked on as it’s more important to us than even the friggin’ photographer. π Here are some other songs we may swap out with the ones above or somehow else incorporate into our day:
‘M’- Chantal Kreviazuk
‘Day Too Soon’- Sia
‘Right There’- Alana Davis (fave musician of all time!!)
‘Colors’- Amos Lee
‘Right Next To You’- Elizabeth & The Catapault
‘Grace’- Jeff Buckley
‘Forever and Ever Amen’- 8mm
‘Count On Me’- Lucy Schwartz
‘Dream’- Priscilla Ahn
‘Somersault’- Zero 7
‘Little Heaven’- Toad The Wet Sprocket (hee… reminds me of my college years!)
There are actually MANY more to the list above. I commute to work so I have an hour drive in the morning and evening where all I do is listen to music and compile song lists/ideas in my head. So far, our music has been the one thing I’m stressing the most about. I just want to music and ceremony to be perfect!! Like what you see in the movies!! lol…

My husband and I definitely wanted songs that most of our guests probably haven’t heard before or at least haven’t heard at a wedding. I also payed close attention because I wanted them to have some meaning for us. Our first dance was to Staind’s “Tangled Up In You” off of their The Illusion of Progress album. I was cracking up after the wedding because my dad was asking me what our first dance was so he could download it. Two other songs/artists we thought about were “Your Guardian Angel” by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (but my sister said she thought about using that song if she ever got married so I didn’t want to take that option away from her) and Ray LaMontagne.
For the cake cutting we used “Until You” by Dave Barnes. I had never heard of him before I started searching for songs for the wedding, but he has several I like. It was really hard for me to pick songs because a lot of the bands I listen to the most don’t exactly have slower songs and if they do, they aren’t about people finding someone they love and getting to be with that person. Good luck!

My Fiance and I are dancing to Aux Armes et Cetera by Serge Gainsboug. It’s a reggae version of the French national anthem, sung in French of course. We were driving in the car one day listening to one of our Ipods, talking about our first dance, and there was a break between songs. He said “whatever the next song is that’s our first dance.” I agreed, thinking that we would hear some terrible hardcore song, and instead it was Aux Armes et Cetera…
Here are some other suggestions:
Black is the Color of my True Love’s Hair covered by the Twilight Singers
A Love Supreme covered by The Twilight Singers
Joga by Bjork
All is full of Love by Bjork
Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs-it has a fast beat but it’s sung slowly.
Un Baiser D’enfant by Kate Bush, just don’t listen to the English version π

We walked in to an acoustic version of “In the Aeroplane” and we danced to Cat Power’s “Sea of Love.” It’s a little melancholy, but it had a couple of things going for it: it’s short (2 mins?) and we got married at the beach. A few people came up afterward and said what a great choice it was.

We danced to “With Whom to Dance?” by the Magnetic Fields. We got sooooooooo many compliments. And the brother of one of our guests is in the Magnetic Fields, so our wedding gift was a pair of tickets to an upcoming show. Score!
I love Band of Horses and we closed the night (i.e. our last dance song) was “I go to the barn because I like the…” That one also got a lot of compliments. We had to have it becuase we’ve danced around the kitchen for years to that one…Instant romance.
