I don’t have any experience with infant meningitis but I’m glad it’s not bacterial.  I had a classmate die of that in high school.

I hope the baby feels better soon!

I don’t have any experience either, but I know that it’s a very serious illness.  I hope the LO makes it!

My cousin’s cousin had meningitis as a baby, I can’t remember if it was viral or bacterial. She ended up losing her hearing from it. She is 11 years old now, and has had her cochlear implant for 9 and a half years. As first her language and speech was a bit slow, as she didn’t hear much for about 12 months between having the meningitis and getting the cochlear implant, but she quickly caught up and now the only difference between her and any other 11 year old is that you might need to wave to get her attention, and it helps if you stand in front of her to talk so she can hear you properly. Also her family have to take some safety precautions when she does activities that require her to take the implant off, (swimming, showering, etc.) such as setting boundaries so she knows what to do because it can be hard to get her attention. (eg, clearly explaining that she has to stay within the safety flags at the beach.) She is the sweetest little girl, very smart and sassy, she has never needed special school or anything, although I think she had an aide in her first year of school to help her concentrate as she gets distracted easily.

My Fiance actually had viral meningitis as a baby and he had no complications. He is just fine.

My cousin had meningitis as a baby (I’m not sure which kind) and lost a lot of his hearing from it. He’s not deaf, but has always worn hearing aids and even then, it’s still difficult–he has always had some trouble with school, and I know the state was required to provide him a tutor/translator for college. He doesn’t know sign language or anything though and is a normal guy, just doesn’t always hear you the first time! Recently he got more modern hearing aids and can hear a lot better. That’s probably a scenario from the scary end of things, I know a lot of people recover and are just fine after.

I have tons and tons of experience with viral and bacterial meningitis in infants.  PM me for detailed info.  I probably see several kids a week with it.
