Last Tuesday I got a manicure and the next day my thumb/thumbnail was KILLING me. My thumb got really swollen, hot, throbbing and the one side of the nail bed was really really gross. It got so uncomfortable that I went to a quickie clinic where they told me I had a staff infection and prescribed antibiotics and gave me some ointment. I haven’t seen any signs of improvement so I’m planning to stop by the same place today or tomorrow. Has anyone else had experience with this? What did you do? I’m typing with one hand because it hurts to press the space button with my thumb!

Sounds like a paronychia. Try warm soaks for about 20 minutes at a time, and I know it hurts but try pushing on it to get some of the pus out. They should drain it at the clinic for you or send you to the ED to have it drained. Really if it’s not improving you should have it drained.

@memorialbride13: I’ve been doing that and I tried to “get the stuff out” but it hella hurts and then starts to bleed.
@sunnywoods: I did and they gave me antibiotics and ointment but it’s not getting better 🙁 Not sure how long it should take.

I worked for a podiatrist with patients, so I dealt with toe nails but let me tell you, if you can AVOID those nail places, please do. I know its fun and a treat and looks nice but seriously, you can have your nails completely ruined aesthetically for the rest of you life.
and also as you might have found, pick up infections.

@Eva Peron: Lesson learned! I’ve gone to the same place for 4 years without any problems, but I will not be going back ever again!

I picked a hang nail and my thumb got infected. I was able to drain it (hurts!) and soaked it a lot and eventually it got better.
