I’d stick with the Mr. and Mrs., but don’t forget that the inner envelope also leaves room for kids’ names. For example: “Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith, Jack and Jill.”

The outer envelope is for the formal names. The inner envelope should be whatever you call them with all the names listed of who you are inviting.
