Did anyone write first names on the inner envelopes instead of Mr. and Mrs. Smith? We are throwing all kinds of etiquette out the window here. We wrote Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith on the outer envelope and we were going to write first names on the inner. If we use first names, should we write their full proper name or how they are known to us? For example, one person has a really long non-American name and they go by their Americanized name so we wrote the proper name on the outer envelope and the Americanized name on the inner? Is it wrong to do nicknames on the inner envelope? I’m not sure anyone will even notice these kinds of things but me.

Now that I understand the difference of inner and outer envelopes (I’m late to the game!), I see how the past invites I’ve received worked.
Anyway, with what I’ve received as a guest, the inner and outer envelopes were addressed the same exact way. I had no idea you could address them differently.

@BetterSherm: Well if you are allowing someone a plus one that would be on the inner envelope not the other (if it wasn’t a specific person). Like you could write John Smith and Guest on the inner envelope but would only have John Smith on the outer.

As a guest, I’ve been alotted a +1, but it was never indicated on the inner or outer envelopes, but on the RSVP card. Wow, this gets confusing…

I don’t plan on using inner envelopes and I will have a pocketfold.
I planned on just addressing the outer envelopes “John Smith and Guest” and if it’s a known couple “John and Jane Smith”. (I personally don’t like using the Mr. and Mrs. husband first and last name.)
After reading this post I know my plan is not proper etiquette, but is my plan way off? Would you be offened if you had it addressed “John Smith and Guest” or “John and Jane Smith”?
I also saw someone said they plan on adding the guests names to the Belly Bands. I am using Belly Bands too, I could also add the names to the sticker on backside of the Belly Bands to keep it closed. Would this be better?
