Good day to you lady bees. I’m looking for some input because I’m drawing a blank right now. We are in the middle of planning our destination wedding in Rio de Janeiro. This is not the typical wedding destination and I’m trying to anticipate the wants and needs of our guests. Our RSVP deadline is October 18th and we are expecting a minimum of 15-20 guests.
For the women we have decided to provide beautiful kaftans and a different one will be selected for each attending:
For the men we are ordering terry velour robes with embroidered initials:
We are also putting together a newsletter prior to departure and a welcome letter the day of arrival.
Is there anything else you ladies (and gents) can think of that you would want or need for a destination wedding you’re attending?
Any and all information would be useful – THANKS!

@CocoClassic: You know your guests best, but I think the men’s robes will be a waste of $. I do like the kaftan for the women though. For the men, maybe you could do a bottle of whiskey or something that is native to Brazil? Honestly, I find the best welcome gifts contain food and/or alcohol!

@MrsWBS: +1. If they don’t wear robes at home they’re not going to start wearing them just because they’re in Rio. You can never go wrong with edibles.

Booze! Snacks, sunscreen, aloe, maybe a beach towel? I *love* the caftan idea!!

@CocoClassic: I love the Kaftans! What an awesome destination!
I have heard that Rio has some really unsafe areas. Maybe a map and tips on what to avoid?

Snacks! I made welcome bags for our guests, and we filled them with all sorts of yummy Hawaiian snacks, sunscreen, hand santizer, a map, letter, etc.

@MrsWBS: The men’s robe will be a waste? Really? I just didnt want them to feel short changed by the laidies getting something all nice and what not.
We are going way out of the box with this one and I want to make it as special as possible for everyone attending. We are all staying in a beach front vacation rental together and I thought about stock piling the bar but that’s not a “gift” per se for the guys alone and I really want them to feel special as well. I thought maybe Cuban cigars would be sexy but no one smokes .
@JenGirl: That’s a good one. I thought about putting together mini travel bags with necessities people forget sometimes (floss, toothpaste, shaving cream, etc.)
@Aquaria: Point taken. I could def seem the ladies wearing the kaftans because they are really pretty but IDK about the robes.

@CocoClassic: Love the caftan idea. The robe may be a stumbling block for the men. Those things take up a lot of room in a suitcase that is probably already full.

Are you trying to provide them with something they will use during the trip or when they get home? I ask because Rio in October is hot as hell. I wouldn’t come anywhere near a terrycloth robe. However, I love the kaftans. I’d get mini (or full size!) bottles of Cachaca for sure or a little caipirinha kit. Maybe key phrases in Portuguese printed on a card?

For our groomsmen we got monogrammed leather (ours are faux leather) toiletry bags… I personally think it’s a nice gift for all the men because, as pp have mentioned, a lot of men don’t wear robes. my fiance and my dad would never use it. but they both love the toiletry bags! we are going to put shave kits and lots of little items in them… could be nice?

@lolot: We have a wedding coordinator so I’m thinking maybe we could hire someone to come in our first night and make some caipirinhas and a variety of drinks with Cachaca (Brazilian Rum) or is that doing too much? I also like the beach towel idea but I would want to get them from Rio and IDK if we will have time to do all of that before they get there…
@adoc86: Thank you very much. I have been to Rio and I LOVE it there. There are some unsafe areas but there isnt anything to avoids specifically. They just need to use their common sense and all stay together. I’m providing a list of things to do while there but maybe I should arrange a day tour for them?
@nixietink: How cute is that? Love the bag idea. Maybe we should order tote bags and personalize each one with stuff we know that person likes and could use on the trip?

@CocoClassic: You coud substitute a cotton robe and lounge pants for the white terry robe.

@julies1949: More food for thought. Didnt think about the size it might take up in a suitcase. Thank you for the important input.
@Overjoyed: How wonderful are your ideas!!?!?!??! I love the idea of a mini caipirinha kit lol. Too cute! The wedding is in May so the weather should be pretty pleasant cause it’s South America’s fall season if you will. The key phrases is a MUST and an awesome idea.
@mu_t: toiletry bags are cute but these folks dont travel as much as my fiancee and I do so IDK how useful they would be to them.
OK SO it looks like I should nix the robes for the guys and keep the kaftans for the women. Maybe I should get some Havainas for the guys (SUPER popular Brazilian sandals/flip-flops). I wore out the 2 pairs I purchased!

@CocoClassic: Not sure where I got October. Sorry. Glad you like the suggestions! I went kinda nuts with my welcome bags too.
