Costs below include gratuity

  • Haircut: $40 x 3 times a year = $120
  • Eyebrow Threading: $14 x 12 times a year = ~$270
  • Bikini wax: $40 x 12 times a year = $480
  • Misc one-time splurge: $50 (ex: nails, massage, etc.) = ~$50

Holy shit, it costs almost a thousand bucks to do what I consider pretty minimal stuff!! foot-in-mouth

And this doesn’t include products like razors, shave gel, lotion, shampoo, basic stuff mostly.

I hardly ever get my hair cut, I hate it and avoid it like the plague!! I would say $100 a year at the salon on average, unless I’m getting it styled for a special occasion or if I’m getting highlights (which I’ve only done once). Maybe $150 a year. Nails, I get my toes done 1-2 times a year, so less than $50 a year there. I’m big into expensive makeup though…I probably spend around $100-$200 a month on makeup alone ($25 mascara 2x a month, plus I sub to 2 beauty boxes-$20 each, and then random other purchases). Shampoo probably $20 or so a month.

I thought I was always low maintenance, but when you add up the cost of the actual maintenance you do, it really is surprising. I did this last year because I wanted to cut some costs and also cut down on the time I was spending doing all of this too because it is not easy to carve that time out, and hey, time is money too!$!

So this is what I was doing and spending last year including tips:

-Dying my own hair, mainly my roots: $40 a year ($10 dollar box 4 times per year)

-Haircuts : $150 a year (just trims with very little styling 3 times a year)

-Eyebrow threading: $139 a year (every 3 weeks)

-Pedicures: $312 a year (every 3 weeks)

-Manicures: $520 a year (every 2 weeks)

-Brazilian wax: $520 a year (every 5 weeks)

-Eyelash extensions: $635 a year (every 5 weeks)

TOTAL: $2316 or $193 a month

I cut out eyelash extensions this year and changed from Brazilian wax to bikini wax and I also do my own manicures for the most part. NEW TOTAL: $953 or $79.41 a month

I also used to do bayalage and highlights, or even the crazy purple colors, but it was getting too damn expensive so that was cut almost 2 years ago.

I do admit that I really miss my eyelash extensions and I may do them again one day. They do leave you with little of your natural lashes after you do them for a long time, but when they are on, you just feel more put together and there is less need for additional makeup. At least for me, I have very small and short lashes. I would love to do some lasering in the bikini area one day, but that is also very expensive. I also try to look for Groupons whenever I can.

I’ll attach some pics of my eyelashes. These were from two different places I tried out. The hardest part was not being able to just rub my eyes whenever I wanted πŸ™‚

Oh, and I also wanted to say that my thought is to each their own. For me personally I do what I do for myself because it makes me feel good. I enjoy it. Everyone should be entitled to do what makes them happy and if this world would be more concerned with just being kind to one another and to oneself, we would be in a much better place.

zoraneale :  I have super sensitive skin too! I should probably add up what I spent this year due to developing new allergies! Changed every product I use and had to change some again. That was not cheap! You’ve inspired me to take a look around at local facialists!

Got my hair done recently and it’s going to be about $100-$120 every three months so $400-$480 peryear

msbibliotecaria :  Hair lasering is really not that expensive if you can find a good groupon in your area! Fiance got me a year’s worth (8 visits) of lasering for a “large” area (full brazilian) for $375.

I loved it so much that I’m buying myself another round to address legs and underarm! After 2 years and a grand total of $750, I’ll be free of shaving!

duchessgummybunns :  Thanks! So, how was the experience? Pain? Any regrowth? Do you still have to maintain, and if so, how often? I’m so curious about this, but the upfront cost is high, even with Groupon πŸ˜‰ So as a gift idea – I like it!! lol

Pain: I’ve heard it depends on the person. For me, it’s a pretty intense feeling of discomfort. It IS pain – to the point that I twitch a little when they are working on more sensitive areas. But, imo, it is FAR preferable to the pain of waxing. I got waxd exactly once and said never again. So if you are used to getting waxed, you should be fine. Worst case scenario, it’s too painful for you, they just adjust the laser strength down to your tolerance level. It may take more visits to get you hair-free, but you won’t be in pain. πŸ™‚ Plus, there are a few different pain-management tools. You can take pain killers beforehand, put numbing cream on the area an hour before, they can place ice packs on the skin for ~5 minutes before starting, etc. And it goes quickly. I schedule my visits so that I can just stop in after work, on my way to the gym. I pop in, immediately go into the room, and it takes 5-15 minutes, then I’m on my way to the gym!

Re-growth: I had my underarms done with a groupon about 6 years ago. But I only got to do 4 of the 6 visits because I moved cross country at that point. Even with only 4 treatments, I didn’t have to shave my armpits but maybe a few times a year for ~ 4 years. And this is coming from someone who had thick underarm hair – like 2 or 3 hairs coming out of every follicle. It did wonders for my self-esteem.

The hair only started growing back in thick enough for 2x/weekly shaving in the last few years. But even with this regrowth, I still only have about 1/3 or 1/4 the amount of hair there I used to.

I think that if I had been able to go the entire 6 (or even 8) visits, I wouldn’t have the re-growth I have now. Even with the re-growth, I wouldn’t take it back. The money spent was well worth not having a constant 5 o’clock shadow under my arms!

All in all I’m a HUGE fan. I’m hate body hair, and my hair is BLACK and very healthy (lol) and I’ve always struggled with shaving and stubble, etc.

Like I said before, I’m currently doing the brazilian, and it’s amazing to never have to think about maintenance down there now.

Definitely float the gift idea by your SO and see what their reaction is! Fiance and I are blown away by the results – money well spent. πŸ™‚

I get a massage and a facial once a month. And my hair done every second month. So perhaps 300 a month in total. xo
