I’ve heard of art, a watch, a really amazing piece of furniture… I love the idea!

I’d get the less expensive ring you want and put the rest in savings for a rainy day. You admittedly don’t really NEED anything else so you might as well save for when that money might come in handy.

Could any extra go to the honeymoon or an engagement trip? Something special celebrating the two of you that will give you lots of great memories.

I’m just not having an ering. Or a wedding ring for that matter! I decided I’d rather put the money towards the wedding.

YouBeBoyAnd : to me, it’s less about the ring itself and more about the symbolism. Some may not agree but I associate the e-ring with the proposal and engagement and I can’t think of anything remotely close that would be a good substitute. If you guys decide to have joint finances once you are engaged, you could just use whatever the difference between the amount he allocated and the actual ring cost towards extras on a honeymoon or something you both wantbut don’t need in the new house etc.

I’d use the funds to go on a trip together and call it a day.

A nicer honeymoon? Or a big anniversary or engagement trip? Maybe he can take you somewhere amazing to give you the cheaper ring.

For an engagement gift for my Fiance (now husband), I surprised him with a trip to Japan. He’s always wanted to go, and we went a month before our wedding. We had an amazing time, and I know we’ll treasure those memories.

I guess I wouldn’t focus on “well, he *would* have spent this, so NOW he could also buy me…” – you guys are getting married! Your lives and presumably your money will be shared. Ask for his input as well.
