Intermittent fasting while TTC?

It sounds like you’re only skipping breakfast if you have a 16 hour fast correct? If you feel better doing it, then just go with it. It’s only bad for you if fasting is a struggle. I haven’t eaten breakfast in over 10 years and it’s just how my body likes to operate. It’s never negatively affected my cycles.

Maybe you can try doing a 14:10 method or something a little less restrictive?

zstbee84 :  Intermittent fasting is about the timing of meals, not reducing calories. If you’re eating smaller meals and less snacks, that could pose a problem. The whole point is to move all of your calories into a shorter eating window. But as long as you don’t feel deprived or restricted, you should be fine.

zstbee84 :  Not necessarily. IF helps stabilize blood sugar so you don’t crave as much food. It prevents you from overeating, but it’s not meant to help you eat less if that makes sense.

zstbee84 :  this is the only info i could find on the subject and it’s not academic, but it does imply it could affect estrogen and progesterone, which is the most important in sustaining a pregnancy:

However, I’m of the opinion that you’re either trying to conceive or you’re trying to lose weight, and you should not be doing both intentionally at the same time. Those first few weeks are critical in terms of nutrients and birth defects etc. If you have an unhealthy relationship with food going into pregnancy, you’re going to have a hard time because you NEED to gain weight, and you shouldn’t be worried or stressed or obsessed about that weight gain. I’m not going to sit here and say you fasting caused your miscarriage, but I do find the timing interesting to say the least. It could just as well as been an abnormality but again, the timing.

Also, I agree with the PP who said that the whole point of intermittent fasting is not to eat less or starve yourself. You’re *really* supposed to pig out on nutrient dense food during your eating time frame. Not like, chips and shit, but like a big old steak and veggies with lots of good fats etc. If this isn’t what you are doing, and you’re just using it as another way to restrict yourself, you’re gonna have a bad time. You also need a very nutrient dense diet full of healthy fats in order to ovulate healthily and conceive.

Overall, I highly recommend you fix your disordered eating before you get pregnant and research the best diet for fertility.

zstbee84 :  I was eating from 3pm-9pm so 6 hours on 18 off and I got pregnant. (Currently 14 weeks along). I had been doing it for about 3 months and it clearly had no effect on my ability to conceive.

I will reiterate that I was eating calorie dense foods and nutrient rich during my eating hours which is really important to not go into starvation mode even if you are eating less calories.

Good luck!

I was doing really well with intermittent fasting (16/8) and a strict paleo/lower carb diet before getting pregnant. It balenced out my blood sugar really well, helped my weight a lot, and I think was helping my overall health…all which I think helped contribute to getting pregnant again. I too have had previous pregnancy losses so was trying to do everything I could to improve my health and egg quality. I don’t know if it’s what helped, but this pregnancy has made it a lot further than any of the previous 5.

I intermittent fasted while I was TTC for several months. I think you should be fine but I would maybe ask your doctor. I only ate between 1pm-8pm I believe. I still ate very healthy and balanced though, the only difference was no snacking after dinner and no breakfast so I didn’t have any coffee with sugar/creamer or bagels or cereal. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I stopped though.
