I would honestly spend $2500 of that in food. Divided by 40 guests, that’s about $62/person. You could find a restaurant with a private room and ask about using it for a reception. City hall for ceremony and then everyone joins you for dinner.

http://www.opentable.com/info/banquets.aspx?m=4 <– list of restaurants with private rooms and their capacities (I would aim for the 50 capacity rooms, since they probably require less of a food minimum)

OR

Check out homeaway.com and ask owners if they’re willing to have their property used for a small wedding ceremony/reception. If you find one willing to do that,  you can make the food right there! Grill meats and corn on the cob, make lasagnas with salad and garlic bread, or order in food.

The rest of the money I would spend on a dress, the rings, and the marriage license. No need for flowers or decorations. Have some friends take pictures, if they have a nice camera. Ask a friend to officiate if you don’t want to go to city hall to do it!

tobe012215:  depends on what is included in that 3k — dress? shoes? jewelry, hair makeup? transportation?

I talked to Starbelly about a patio buyout, and the minimum was $6100 for Sat. brunch. 🙁

You might want to look at parks and being very casual. Here’s a 50 person wedding for $8k: http://thebudgetsavvybride.com/easy-breezy-picnic-wedding/
