Honestly if my invitation didn’t have enough room to fit the invitees, I would look for a different invitation. What’s the point of an invitation if it can’t invite? But I’m very much a “function comes ahead of style” person when it comes to invitations.

Invitation etiquette varies a lot, and I’m not an expert, so I won’t comment on whether to use initial or first name. But leaving out the wife’s name (“Mr. John Smith & Family”) is definitely unacceptable. I also think it’s nice to name the children on the invitation (rather than “and Family”), but I’m probably in the minority on that.

If you know the man more than the woman then put Mr J Smith & Ms J Jones and Family. If you know the female better then reverse their names.

I’m a Ms Birth Surname too and would not appreciate being subsumed by my husband’s name.

Also don’t write families as presumably they consider themselves family with whomever lives under their roof.

CarolinaPeach13:  I got my save the dates from Minted and had them print the envelopes as well. I think what you could do is, after you get the digital proof of your invitations but before you approve the proof, ask the graphic designer who made the proof if he or she can fix this envelope for you so that the names are on two lines and all in the same font. I don’t think there is any reason they shouldn’t be able to do this.

Inner or outer envelope? How about the Smith Jones Family?

Can you put Smith & Jones? Then they will automatically assume that everyone under their roof/in the family is invited.
