Because the background is going to be such a dark color, the font needs to really pop. I don’t know if it’s just that the font isn’t bold enough or if the gold just kind of melds into the background.

From my own personal preference, I would probably do the invite font in a normal font and then your names in something flowy and scripty. I hear you on the not creative days, I had a lot of those leading up to my wedding day too. Some days I just threw it in and ignored the project until the next day.

I would suggest finding a vector online for the background.  I think that having something with more dimension, rather than a solid color is going to look better.

I think a dark green “chalkboard” background could work well:

Also, I think you should look into finding a font that isn’t ‘handwriting’ font.  There are TONS of free fonts online and downloading them is pretty easy.  Here’s steps:

And here is a great pin-board for finding fonts.  Jessica Bishop is the blogger for Budget Savvy Bride and has her own stationary company:

(note, not all of these are free fonts, but you can find tons of free ones @ dafont.com)

Also, I little trick that I developed when I was making a mason jar/firefly look (see pic below) to make the fireflies “glow” is to make one smaller circle in “butter”, then duplicate that circle and make it ~50% transparent and offset it a bit over the first dot.  This will give it a bokeh effect!

Here was my attempt at “glowing” fireflies:
