I’m trying to word our invitations. I really, really want people to dress appropriately for our wedding without stipulating a dresscode. Do you think this says “please wear your best clothes and possibly have a change up for evening”?
“Together with their parents SpecialSundae and The Puppy cordially invite you to join them on the occasion of their wedding at Pretty Castle, Scottish Countryside on Saturday the 21st of April 2012 at 2pm followed by the wedding breakfast.
The celebrations will continue in the evening with a ball from 8pm.”
Suggestions of better wording would be welcome!

@SpecialSundae: instead of 2pm i’d put two o’clock in the afternoon and then “the celebration(s?) will continue with a ball at eight o’clock in the evening”

@elliestan: Good points. It’s really hard to word these things with the balance between classy and up your own backside being so fine!

Do you think it says “formal wedding” though?

i would change ball to formal ball – to me, that would denote needing to wear something fancy! also, since it’s at 2pm, would it be more apt to call it a wedding brunch?

Good idea on “formal wedding ball”.
“Wedding breakfast” is a quirk of UK wedding traditions. The meal after the ceremony is the wedding breakfast even if it’s at midnight as traditionally the bride and groom would fast on the morning of their wedding and break their fast with their guests afterwards.

Oops! And I just remembered that the ceremony is at 3pm. Good thing I remembered before I ordered the invitations!

Someone’s suggested this alternative:
“Together with their parents, SpecialSundae and The Puppy cordially invite you to join them on the occasion of their wedding at Pretty Castle, Scottish Countryside on Saturday the 21st of April 2012 at three o’clock in the afternoon.
The ceremony will be followed by the Wedding Breakfast
Celebrations will continue in the marquee with a champagne and piano reception at 8 o’clock in the evening followed by an evening ball.”
