We requested free samples from The American Wedding.  They were nice.

I loved the sample i ordered from Moira Design Studio, but they cost $5 to order.  I found that very few sites offer free samples.

card, like one that folds in half? Cici new york carries them (that cost an arm, a food, and your leg) but it may be a good example of what youre looking for.

Have you tried going to Etsy? I ordered a sample wedding invitation set from a vendor there http://www.etsy.com/shop/confetticrush and the designs and quality were really nice. It only costs about $6 for the sample set (yeah, not free, but still not that much either). The shop owner is also super responsive and easy to communicate with. If that’s not an option, you can always go down to a card shop or paper store and look at paper samples first.
