I would send a save the date for a destination 6 months out to give enough people time to save. wedding invitations go out 2 months exactly before your wedding and RSVP date is usually 3 weeks after sending the invite.

So for you save the date cards need to go by 16th of April.  Invitations August 16th RSVP date 6th September which gives you enough time to send B list invitations 🙂

I am getting married in the DR on September 18th. In order to let our guests know that we were having a destination wedding we sent our save the dates in November 09 (10 months ahead of time).

When it comes to DW’s traditional timing doesn’t apply. You could send your save the dates now, I probably would if I were you. I have friends getting married in October that aren’t doing destination weddings and they already sent their STD’s. Destination Wedding STD’s are sent as far as one year out.

My invitations are going out mid-June. This is because my hotel needs to have a list of all my guests one month prior to the wedding and all trips need to be paid off by August 1st. So I made August 1st my RSVP date and gave them 8 weeks I believe to go online, check details, and decide for sure if they are coming and book the trip. The good thing about DW’s are you don’t really have to chase. If someone hasn’t booked their trip, they aren’t coming.

Good Luck!
