I would probably get the 4s if I were in your shoes. I have it now and love it. I haven’t upgraded to ios6, but am going to tonight.

I read the review on cnet, which went into great detail on all of the changes from 4s to 5. You might want to check that out to help you make your decision. One of the things that ticks me off is that they changed the port that you plug the USB/power cable into, so if you already have an iPhone, you need new cords. And any cases you have won’t fit.

You get everything the iPhone 5 has except the bigger screen and faster processor.

ETA: iOS 6 is awesome.

Have you tried cleaning your home button? That’s the issue my husband had with his. Canned air fixed it.

I would wait until Jan and get the iphone 5. Also, if you’re techy at all, there are hacks you can do to make it to where you basically don’t need a home button – my husband also has that. It’s directional swiping on certain parts of the screen that bring menus up instead of using the physical button. But, you have to be comfortable with jailbreaking it.

My brother is super techy and I emailed him this EXACT question last week. I’m just going to copy/paste his response (on which I got the 5):

If you’re out of  contract, go with the new one.  Even though it’s $100 more, you’ll get way better experience over the life of the device with the 5.  The things these phone do and processing power they need is increasing so fast that by next   year the 4s is going to feel sluggish.  IMO you’ll be happier with the 5.

@CorgiTales:  I agree with your brother.  FI was debating between the 4S and 5.  I told him that he’s eligible for the 5 and it’s only $100 more.  By the time he’d be eligbile for a new iPhone – the 4S is going to be “crap” because of it’s “age”.

I would go with the 5. I have the 4s and love it, but I would go with the 5 if I were in your position. Faster, lighter, better camera, etc.
