Hey Bees – I need to know if any of you have had IPL photofacials and what are your experiences with it?
About 7 years ago I went to the Dermatologist for bumps on my skin – he did not even have me take off my makeup – said it was adult onset acne and prescribed very strong benzoyl peroxide cream to treat. Unfortunately for me it was not actually acne – it was an allergy to aloe and turns out that I am also allergic to benzoyl peroxide (and vitamin C). The cream he prescribed made my face worse and caused scarring. That is how we found the aloe allergy – put aloe on to try and help the reaction to the medication and bam – was like fire ants all over my face.
I managed to heal my skin and the bumps were gone forever but the scarring left hyperpigmentation all over my face and I was told I would need laser treatments to remove it. I really was terrified and tried to give them time to fade (which it has a lot) but still have scars that makeup cannot cover up. So I finally am biting the bullet and am having my first photofacial tomorrow. (they will know after the first treatment how many I will need)
So I have read all the horror stories and seen burns from people that had bad experiences but I also know that searches on the internet can be deceiving.
So have you had one – what were your results? I am not trying to look 10 years younger – just would love to not deal with such bad scarring

Wow, sounds like you’ve been through alot with your skin!
I had five sessions of IPL on my face, chest and arms three years ago to remove redness and freckles and I had good results. I had no scarring or bruising as I’ve seen on some of my own google searches. As they told me, some of the discolouration returned and I will need touchups (mostly the redness). I made sure I used a reputable dermatologist as alot of the horror stories seem to come from inexperienced practitioners using too high a frequency.
I am quite fair and the last session that I had on my arm left red stripes for about three weeks that DID go away.
See how your face looks in about two weeks. The hyperpigmentation will darken initially and then go away, sometimes you only need a couple of sessions. I hope you get the results your looking for, I’m sure it will go just fine.
Also, if you don’t already, use a good sunscreen for life.

@BijouKitty: Thank you 🙂 I had the treatment yesterday and responded very well – pigmentation is coming up just as it should – no swelling, no burns and it looks like a gentle eraser has been passed over my face – was not really looking for any anti-aging from this, but it is kind of neat to see it. I have my next appointment already booked and am so excited that there will be an end to this silly saga 🙂
Will post pictures when all of the treatments are done – maybe it will help another Bee who is on the fence 🙂
