I’m attending this b’day dessert thing for a girl I barely know. I know her in passing from church and we’ve met together for coffee once (honestly, I can’t remember if she even drank coffee when we met). She’s in her late 40’s (??). She only invited a handful of people to this – and it just dawned on me that I should take a gift.
I hate how generic the Starbucks card is – but I can’t think of anything else!
I don’t know her well enough to know anything else about her… she has a cat, she’s vegetarian…
not sure she uses iTunes….
Flowers??? Scented candles? ugh! Bottle of wine??
I really don’t want to spend a ton of money – just don’t want to show up empty handed!
Any brilliant ideas for me?!

I like your bottle of wine idea!

I don’t see anything wrong with a Starbucks giftcard. It’s generic, sure, but you barely know her.
ETA- I voted for the Starbucks giftcard because that’s the gift I’d most like to receive. 🙂

I went with a candle because she lives alone and has a cat. She could use a little romance. HA! I’m awful.
I don’t really know anybody who would be offended by a vase with candle combo and you could get something decent and cost effective at, like, cost plus or something. It makes it a little more personal than the sbux card without too much of a committment.
[edit: i reread your original post and you didn’t mention that she was single. i think this speaks more of me than her. apologies!]

I voted other: my idea is some sugar scrub+lotion from bath and body works would be nice! What lady doesn’t love that!

I would love that gift. The absolutely last thing I would want would be a candle or bath products. I hate getting those as gifts. I will never use them, and my friend just wasted his/her money. If you know what kind of wine, she likes, taht can be a nice gift, but if you have no idea what wine she likes, I’d steer clear.

@mrsSonthebeach: I don’t know if she drinks wine or not, but I texted a friend who knows her much better to find out. She’s into holistic living, so I’d be surprised… I may just go the wine route and call it a day. I like that much better than the starbucks card (but that’s just because that would be my preference).

I would love the starbucks card!

I voted for the Starbucks card. You can’t go wrong with that. I’m always thrilled when I get one!
My second choice would be flowers. I never buy them for myself/my home, so it’s always nice when someone gives me a boquet for a special occasion. My only holdback with the flowers is that you guys will be out and maybe she won’t want to look after them and remember to take them home.

As long as you know she likes Starbucks, I don’t see anything wrong with getting her a $20 card. I actually gave a $5 card to someone that I had met a month prior to at Christmas because I was getting all of our other friends presents. Now she is almost like my best friend.

I’d do the starbucks card because most women have gobs of bath stuff from bdays and xmases already, flowers may wilt a bit while you are out or she may not be going straight home after the get together, and wine is iffy b/c you may not get a type she likes (I’m pretty particular about my wine)

Starbucks card will be A) nice and B) easiest to re-gift if it’s not her thing. 🙂
