YES a “smaller” e ring is okay! But be prepared for the comments. Some people feel the need to make other women feel bad for not sporting a giant rock. My tips? Consider the width of your finger in comparision to the diamond, not the actual carat. And ofcourse, sparkle factor is paramount to me!

After many hurtful comments from my family, I am still proud of my 1/2 carat, canadian diamond! This is excellent cut and D color. It sparkles like crazy!!I am a size 7 but my hands are very slender, I found this to be my perfect carat weight.

I don’t feel like .5 is small, especially when you consider the price point…Diamonds are INSANELY overpriced!!!

Any size diamond is gorgeous!

if it’s good quality (which is easier with a small diamond) it will sparkle like crazy regardless.

Mine when we bought it was a .5 ct center stone but it had visible inclusions (they told me it was SI2 but I really think it was I1 clarity) so I traded it in for the Leo (fancy cut) nice quality .45 diamond.  I know its basically the same from .45 to .5 but I still feel a little sad about going smaller BUT like I said, the quality will make it look sooo much nicer.

I will say, admire the .5 ct threads… the bigass rings still make me jealous/insecure/sad at times, regardless of how much I love my ring.  I actually can’t even believe my Fiance spent more than 3 mo’s pay on it but he doesn’t make that much but still wants to give me everything he thinks I deserve haha.

At the end of the day, whatever ring YOU love is the right one for you, as I’m sure everyone else will tell you.  You can always upgrade the diamond later if decide you want to and have the $$ to do so.

ETA: My Future Sister-In-Law just got engaged with a very simple, small (maybe .25?) diamond solitaire ring.  Although my first instinct was aww that’s cute, I know she is so genuinely happy with it and in love that it doesn’t matter at all that she and her Fiance can’t afford a huge rock, or even a fancy ring like my Fiance was able to get me.

@hyperJulie:  Thanks! I think that’s why Fiance picked it, almost everyone I know told me that it was “very me!” :]

This is how my ring was (.5ct center stone, sz 7.25 finger) – can’t wait to post the updated version! — sorry I still can’t make pics shrink

Mine is .41, G color, SI2 and my finger is a size 4, so it looks bigger on me. I love it!

This is the ring that I plan to propose with next week.  It’s a .34c center stone.  With the diamonds on the side it brings the total up to .5c She requested a small stone so I tried to pick out a nice one.  Its an ideal cut, E color VS2.

My wedding ring is .5ct center stone and 1tcw on a size 6. I personally only looked at center stones than were less than 1ct because I personally dislike high profile settings and big diamonds tend to stick out…alot. I think the size is just right for my hand especially since I plan on adding much more bling with anniversary bands like in the picture below.

My ring is .33 and I love it. It’s D colour and VS1..I would rather have the smaller diamond with good stats than a larger diamond that was yellowy and had visible inclusions (no offence to anyone with those features, just not my preference). And my finger is size 4!

I’m not sure if anyone said this already since I didn’t read every comment, but I wish I had known about estate jewelry when we were initially e-ring shopping.  I think all diamond sizes are gorgeous and you can get some amazing deals with “pre-owned” estate jewelry =)
