Personally, I adore solitaires. I have discussed with my boyfriend in heavy detail about how much I would prefer a princess cut solitaire over anything else. But I understand where you’re coming from about wanting something different from her previous ring. When I was previously engaged, I had a ring with a LOT going on (halo, split shank, pave diamonds). So I really want something simple and classic, and like you said, a stone to be the center of attention for my forever ring. I wish you luck in the search! I’m sure she’ll love whatever you get since it’s coming from you! 🙂

I absolutely love my solitaire! Not a big jewelry girl either and I love simplicity… when I was ring shopping, everything was too overdone (for lack of a better word) for my taste.

I must say I don’t really understand this “had a thick ugly solitaire band. So I thought this time maybe get diamonds.” Was her first ring not a diamond then ? And you want to get some stone that is different than what she had ? Solitaires are rarely on ‘thick ugly bands” so I don’t really get that either . …but be that as it may …
I dont see anywhere in your posts that you are talking with your fiancée about what she really likes /prefers, although you do know she is not greatly into jewellery per se. Unless she has stated outright she wants you to choose it completely , I think you should confer with her and get what she indicates she likes best, be that by ring shopping at stores or online .

I love a solitaire because since it is so simple I am less likely to grow out of it, it is timeless!

I am not a solitaire fan. Just too plain for me. Ask her what she likes

This is REALLY a discussion you have to have with your Fiance. I love a solitaire because it can be paired with almost any band, but lots of other people prefer other styles. DO NOT guess. Find out what she likes, either from her or from relatives, but don’t guess.

Definitely ask her first for what she likes, but I love my solitaire! I jazzed it up a bit by getting a unique setting, but I love the simplicity of it – I think it looks timeless.

mdom7 : love solitaire here’s mine

Solitaire is definitely a classic and will emphasize the diamond the most. Here’s a little something different that does not emphasize the main diamond as much as a solitaire would, but rather places the emphasis on the overall design: oval with side stones in a rose gold scrolled setting

I love solitaires. To me they are classic, timeless, and allow you to put all of the focus and budget on the center stone.
