I’m newer to the site, but I’ve asked this question on the Knot and Wedding Bells to no avail before and was wondering if anyone could empathize here. I live in Alberta, Canada and have had a pretty bad time looking at wedding gowns. My big frustrations are;
1. Super pushy, very rude bridal consultants.
2. I can’t find a single dress that isn’t a strapless sweetheart A-line with or without god awful pickups in my size (14-18).
3. Whenever I ask to see a dress that isn’t strapless and that will actually go onto my body I’m treated like I’m making some outrageous request.
4. That bridal consultants keep showing me dresses way out of my price range after I’ve been firm with them.
I actually haven’t looked in months because of a combination of the above. I went to a bigger salon in the city, they showed me eight horrendous dresses and one gorgeous one…that just happened to be $1500 more than I wanted to spend. And they made sure to sell my mother on it (knowing she’s not contributing), and to tell me that being a larger bride I “won’t be able to do better than this”.
Ugh. Does anyone else experience/get frustrated by this kind of crap while dress shopping?

Hi and welcome 🙂
Sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience it’s not right! I am relatively small and looked for a sweetheart strapless gown so I didn’t go through what you are describing, but I just wanted to say don’t get discouraged and give up, there is a dress out there for every bride and for you too, you just haven’t found it yet!

Oh my gosh! I can’t believe what you have been through! You would think that bridal consultants would be helpful at least.
What city in Canada are you from/closest to? Maybe there are some Bees here from the same city/town that know of a good bridal shop.
I got my dress from Wedding World (here in Edmonton) and I thought they were pretty good, all though I went on a big blow out sale and it what pretty hectic to say the least.

That’s terrible! I’m having trouble finding a dress that I love, but I bought a dress that would work early on. Maybe try to find one online before you go to a boutique, to show them what you’d like?
Hope things get better!

@missmeowwoof: I live in Calgary (not too far away for a road trip to Edmonton if Calgary turns bust!). I’ve had a really hard time with being made to feel guilty by the sales consultants for being a larger bride, but again I shouldn’t be surprised because a lot of my friends had the same problem with these places.
Thanks for the support though bees!

Sorry your dress shopping has been so frustrating.
I can’t relate exactly because I haven’t gone dress shopping yet. But I have been dress shopping with a few friends and they describe similar situations to yours. Rude consultants and limited dress options. One friend went to about 6 bridal shops before she found a dress she liked and friendly consultants. The other found a dress she liked at the second shop: a sweetheart neckline dress with pick ups. LOL. It may take a while but you’ll find something.
Be patients and don’t give any rude consultants a comission!

@FutureJessicaMcB: Have you been to Deza’s Bridal? It’s in Country Hills Village I got amazing service there. No pushy sales people, the owner just kind of hovered behind me and took the dresses I picked out. She suggested dresses for me, but I didn’t feel bad for saying no to trying them on. I think I tried on 8-9 dresses, most of them picked out by me. I ended up getting my dress there. Most of the dresses I tried on were under $2000.
I avoided Ethos at all cost, and did not get very good service at Cameo & Cufflinks. Sounds like you may have been to the Bridal Centre, which I don’t like because I hate not being able to look through dresses myself. What kind of stupid policy is that? Anyway, sorry for ranting….but definitely check out Deza’s.
Here is a pic of my dress (and you can see what the store looks like too). A lot of their sample sizes were in a 12 so you should be ok trying the dresses on! I know all the dresses in this pic are strapless sweetheart, but there was a gorgeous halter lace dress right beside my dress, it was absolutely gorgeous but I wanted strapless for sure!

1. Your dress is beyond amazing! So beautiful! I wouldn’t mind that kind of strapless because it isn’t all fluff.
2. My future in-laws live in Coventry, so I don’t know why I didn’t know about this place. Thanks so much for letting me know! I’ll see if I can round up my Maid/Matron of Honor and my oldest sister-in-law for an outing. And you’re correct, I did go to Bridal Centre AND Ethos. Bridal Centre made me cry, Ethos made me feel like a brokeass.
Also, has anyone ever heard anything about Taffeta and Tulle in Airdrie? Someone I went to college with said she really liked it there, but her taste can be questionable sometimes.

@FutureJessicaMcB: You’re welcome (and thanks for the compliment about my dress)! I’ve heard too many horror stories about Ethos, and the Bridal Centre is just plain stuck up. I think too many Calgarian brides just go there because they’re the most well-known, but I’m unwilling to put up with their snottiness! Ethos never even bothered to return my call about a dress, and that did it for me.
If you see an older lady at Deza, it’s probably the owner Deza! I really liked how she was there, because you can tell she CARES about her business. Her prices are very good, and the brands are amazing. She carries Enzoani, Jacqueline, Christina Wu (which is the designer of my dress), Demetrios, and I think she carries Vera Wang too (but I did’t see any). She knows her brands well, and actually does the alterations herself. I can’t wait until my dress comes in!
Also, if you for some reason don’t have any luck @ Deza’s and want to try another salon with really good service, try Echo’s Bridal downtown @ Fashion Central! They are on the lower level, and the older lady is very, very sweet. They carry La Sposa, Mon Cheri, Demetrios and some dresses are from Turkey too.
I’ve considered going to Taffeta and Tulle in Airdrie, but I’m really unsure about the brands they carry. Plus, I think they sell off the rack…which I know some brides would prefer, but I’d rather buy a dress that hasn’t been tried on by other people!
Good luck finding your dress!
