I don’t have a child, but I think that elf on the shelf is creepy and can definitley understand why you child is afraid of it.  Nothing like having this stuffed toy mysteriously moving around and being told that it is watching your every move.  Creepy as hell.

Sunshine09:  That thing is creepy!! And I think it’s super weird they are doing it at daycare. What if some parents don’t have their kids believe in Santa? What if not everyone celebrates Christmas? What if IT’S JUST FREAKING CREEPY!!!

My friends started the Elf thing this year with their 3 and 1 year old. Obviously the 1 year old doesn’t even pay attention but the 3 year old HATES it. He throws things at it and makes faces.

Have you talked to the Daycare? I don’t understand why they can’t/won’t stop it for one child. That seems unfair to make your LO suffer like for an elf.

My LO isn’t born yet, but the elf on a shelf scares the bajeezus out of me! It’s bad enough that he just looks creepy, but the whole moving around the house in the middle of the night thing!? No. Just no.

I think it’s a bit creepy and probably would have scared the crap out of me as a kid.

Besides, teaching children to uncritically accept intrusive surveillance is a little sinister in itself…

I don’t like Elf on the Shelf because the thought of it (and it’s creepy eyes) gives me the creeps. I don’t blame your son!

You’re in a really tough spot because it’s at his daycare, so I don’t have any advice to stop the nightmares sorry!

Honestly if it were my kid, I’d buy an Elf on the Shelf. Then I would explain the entire story and explain that it’s just a stuffed doll, ie tell him the truth. Then to prove it, I’d cut the doll open and show him the stuffing and all. Yeah, I’m not a fan of telling lies to children, especially when the lie is doing nothing but scaring him. Then explain to him not to tell the other children… Idk. Just my thoughts.

Whatever happened to just telling a kid that Santa always knows if they are naughty or nice?  Why the need for a creepy ass elf hanging around, watching, and then reporting back to Santa every night?  Way too much.

MrsCallalily:  Meh… I’d be pretty annoyed if my daycare stopped doing something fun, magically, and holiday spirited that my child really enjoyed because one kid in the class was afraid of it. That’s what bothers me the most about school/daycares today – they cater way too much to every child’s every demand. It’s why kids grow up with such entitlement, “I don’t like that/don’t want to do that/am offended by that” and they ruin it for the rest of the class.

Anyway…. Totally agree with your kid OP. Elf on the Shelf is hella freaky

serenitysky:  I agree with telling your kid the truth about the elf being fake/not real.  I think it would solve the issue with him being afraid of it.  But like serenity said, make sure to express the importance of keeping that info to himself.

I would say buy one, and read the story book that comes with it.  Then let him decide where to place him in the house doing silly things.  Maybe once he gets to have hands on it, it will cure his fear.

make elf write on the bathroom mirrors, string toilet paper on the tree, he might have fun.
