My Aunt is a seamtress and I’ve also created some lovely dresses (nothing as fancy as a wedding dress tho), so we are designing and sewing my dress. Start to finish, top to bottom. I see all these posts about differant designers, styles, etc, but haven’t seen much for designing your own. I’m getting ideas right now and then my Aunt and I will be drawing a few mockups. I will propably post the top picks after we draw them up.

I’m having my dress made. I found a dress I really liked, but I didn’t like the price, so I’m having it made with a few changes. She’s supposed to call me any day now to come in to try it on for the first time and I’m so excited. We did all the alterations on a muslin pattern first, so it should be just about perfect for me when it’s done (I HOPE!!!). All in all, this is saving me about $1500 and it’ll be all mine. I just hope my idea works out!

I’ve already looked at fabric shops in nearby towns. I’ve found some very nice, decently priced plain satin, but even if I use the expensive embroidered fabric I just love, my dress should cost less than $200. Depending, of course, on how much fabric we will be using. I’m thinking about using both the plain and embroidered fabrics in my dress, but havent decided how yet.

I am also a seamstress and it would have cost me more to make my gown than it was to purchase it; however, I did make my girls gowns because I could make them for less than what I would have had to pay retail for them ready made.

I’m *sort of* making my dress. We came across an Edwardian lace dress that lost its lining. So we’re re-lining the dress with a blush satin cotton blend fabric, so it’s a ton of work. We’re also fixing a few parts that were falling apart.
I can’t wait for it to be done!!

My sister had her dress made when she lived in Dubai. Wasn’t super complicated, but it cost less than $300 and looked awesome.

@Shylis: I was going to have my aunt make mine but she lives in the other side of the state. With traveling back and forth, it would have probably come up to about the same price of the dress I bought.

I’m glad my Aunt only lives 30 minutes away.
I’m very excited to get started on this, but since I have been loosing weight lately and the wedding isn’t until November, I should probably wait before we actually start cutting and sewing. But hopefully this weekend, we will be designing it and getting plans and supplies in order.
