Probably not quite what you wanted to hear, but my friend who is 41/42 is currently TTC. So far she has conceived without too much trouble but keeps on having miscarriages (doctor says probably due to old eggs). I think the miscarriage rate is something like 40+% at 42, so just something to keep in mind. I have heard that supplements like CoQ10 can sometimes be helpful, although it’s mostly anecdotal rather than scientifically proven.

My friend had both her kids after the age of 40, and another friend had hers at 49.

Prettysmile40:  I have two – my cousin was about 42 when she had her third child. I don’t believe she had too many problems as she actually had her kid before she married her second husband (had the third kid with him). I don’t know if it was an “accident” or planned, but I don’t believe she needed intervention (IVF, etc.).

Another success story – however this one took a while – my co-worker from my old job. She was doing IVF iwth her husband, and it took them five years, but they had a healthy baby boy at the end. Then she was all, “I can’t have any more biological kids after this one so we’ll adopt as we don’t want our son to be an only child.” Then boom! She’s pregnant again with a girl. Total surprise.

You just never know.

I meant to add that the co-worker was in her early 40s when she had her boy, and she’s 45 now and pregnant with the surprise girl. WB won’t let me edit my post.

Prettysmile40:  I’ve worked with 2 women who became first time moms at 40. Neither needed any medical intervention/fertility treatments to conceive. I also recently met a woman who had a whoopsie baby (her 4th child) at 47. That said, obviously anecdotes (positive or negative) don’t really have any impact on your personal situation. If you haven’t already done so, maybe talk to your gyn? She can give you more personalized guidance.

Prettysmile40:  Oh, it’s always worth a try. I am 32 and miscarried my first pregnancy, so it’s hardly exclusive to women in their 40s. Just don’t wait too long to seek medical help if things aren’t working out. It might not be a bad idea to do a CD3 (cycle day 3) blood test check your TSH, AMH and FSH as soon as possible, and also get your husband to do a sperm analysis. Both tests are fairly easy and cheap and can tell you a lot about your overall fertility. That way you will have a better idea of how things are looking without wasting any time.

Very interested. I’m on cusp of deciding either this is it and to try or to leave it alone.

My aunt and uncle decided to try for a 3rd baby when she was 40. They got twins. So that was good but really unexpected.

Prettysmile40:  I’m 39, he’s 45, we each have 2 children from prior marriages.  After 12 years, he’s getting a vasectomy reversal this summer so we can try for one together. It’s out of our hands at this point as we won’t try IVF or anything else.

CHEERS to you!
