@SadieBee: I’m in SW ohio 🙂
Our hospital is at least 30 minutes away so I guess that’s not too far. Still- depending on timing, weather and traffic it could be up to an hour.
I’d say there’s no problem in that. I certainly wouldn’t give birth at the hospital right up the street as it’s not nearly as good as the one our dr uses. I’ve known many women who drive up to an hour to their hospital of choice and make it just fine.

I’m curious about this this, too. We live just over an hour from my doctor and hospital.

I’m currently six months pregnant, and our hospital is an hour away from where we live. I’m not concerned about it – there is a hospital in the city where we live, but they are the time that when you walk in they lay you down in bed with an IV and that’s that. I wanted a program with a midwife where they’re open to you being active to encourage labor along, try different positions, don’t require an IV unless it’s necessary, and have labor tubs for pain and/or delivery. They also have a NICU in the hospital and are top ranked, two things our local hospital is lacking. So I have absolutely no doubts about making the long drive to our hospital – labor is nearly always a very long process, sure it might suck making that drive in labor and traffic will suck if it’s rush hour, but it’s worth it to me.

Depending on how things go with us (I’m trying to get some genetic testing done that, if it turns out we have an issue, will likely mean we can’t deliver here) I might end up travelling 5 hours to a hospital!
