I just thought this was an interesting topic. I was looking at cheap colored stone eternity bands and it got me thinking, is CZ sometimes better? Like durability wise. Obviously it is not as good as diamond, moissanite, sapphire or ruby, those are all more durable than cz. But what about for the stones that fall below cz on the Mohs scale (Google says cz 8-8.5), if your biggest concerns are the look and the longevity of your jewellery then would actually be not only more affordable, but a better choice if you wanted the color of a softer stone?
And on a semi-related note, does anyone know why they haven’t made opal cz? Opals are beautiful, but so fragile, and the synthetics aren’t much more durable from what I’ve read and that annoys me, lol.

nykkee : I wear CZ earrings at times. And don’t care what they look like because of the fact that it’s just earrings.

pinkcorsage : do you have colored ones? I’m also wondering if the cloudiness I’ve heard can happen with clear czs is an issue with the colored ones. Like does the color fade?

There are synthetic opals that are quite durable and beautiful. I have had one for many years that has held up fine. Colored CZ can get cloudy but may not be quite as noticable.

majorairhead : are the synthetic opals much better? I read they were only slightly tougher than the real ones. I’m thinking about a little silver eternity ring to add to my wedding set. Opal is my husband’s birthstone. But I’m worried about the durability as I never remove my rings and I think it would get beat up. So I was leaning towards emerald cz, since emerald is the birthstone of May and that’s when we were married.

I’m not a hundred percent sure about their durability in relation to other synthetic stones. When I purchased it they did not mention that it was particularly delicatr and although I do not wear it everyday I have worn it quite a bit without any problems. Then again I also have a 5 Stone natural Emerald that I work quite a bit as well and have had no problems with . Admittedly I don’t treat my rings roughly or bang them around with rough jobs as I would remov them for anything like that. Synthetic emeralds would be a lovely choice,as well though and possibly better for extreme daily wear. I have an older half eternity type band with synthetic emeralds and I don’t think anyone else would know they’re not genuine. They’ve obviously stood the test of time because I’m sure it’s at least 30 years old if not more
