Like many of you, I have been trying to lose weight. Some people say they cut out soda and the weight starts to come off. I have no problem cutting out the regular soda, but I need the diet to substitute. I don’t drink coffee and work at night so I need that caffeine in the evenings. Just wondering. 🙂

@KatyElle:That was the most awesome post I have ever seen.

It’s not great. It’s a lot of chemicals. Don’t feel like you’re making a super healthy choice if you drink it. But if you really need some caffeine and/or the illusion that you are not missing out on regular Cokes, it’s fine. You will not gain weight from it or anything. I prefer it to Coke so I drink it all the time, but I’m under no impression that this is a healthy habit.

Any type of soda, whether regular or diet, is bad for dieting because it makes you bloat and retain water weight. With regular soda, you drop weight because you’re cutting out the sugar. On the health side, even the diet is unhealthy because of the artifical sweeteners. Basically though for dieting, it just makes you bloated.
You said you don’t drink coffee; do you like tea? Tea has caffeine in it but is non-carbonated and healthier. You can use honey or a sparingy amount of sugar or a sweetener to sweeten it and you won’t be bloated later and you still get that boost. Green tea is really good for you and you can buy them with different flavors. Also if it’s taste you don’t like with coffee, you can get sugar free creamers that only have 15 cals a serving and sweetens it without extra cals.

@KatyElle: That was cute! I hope the OP finds the humor in it 🙂 Searching google is actually a great way to find some answers on this topic though. I personally don’t think that Diet soda is good for you. I never drink it because of all of the chemicals in it.
I second @mrsmurraytobe‘s tea suggestion. It’s a great way to get the extra caffeine you need in a healthier way.

It depends on who you ask. There are plenty of studies out there, many of which say those sweeteners are only bad in huge quantities that you’ll never consume through soda alone, others which say that more studies need to be done about how all the ingredients interact since they’ve mostly just studied the aspartame. They do know that diet soda makes you hungrier, though, so if weight loss is your goal, I would err on the safe side and start looking for a tea you enjoy. Or just drink water, even better!

Eh, I generally avoid drinking diet pop. I always feel kinda “ick” afting drinking it. I prefer either having tea (hot or chilled) and ocassionally I have those crystal light things. Mostly I like drinking just plain water though.
I have heard that people who drink diet pop tend to lose less weight overall than someone who doesn’t drink any pop at all. That could just be a rumor though, lol.

Diet coke’s artificial sweeteners cause your body to react as though there is sugar…only there isn’t. So your blood stream gets flooded with hormones to mop up the non-existant sugar. When there is nothing there, you get sugar cravings, thus driving you to overeat anyway. All those calories you thing you are saving get overcompensated with by your body’s cravings. It doesn’t happen to everyone, but to most people. There was a major study that was just published about it.

Aspartame (the standard “diet” sweetener) is pretty funky, I avoid it. Future Mother-In-Law is addicted to Diet Coke (literally) and gets splitting headaches if she doesn’t drink it. It’s unfortunate…

The sweetener in Diet Coke is aspartame and is used in lab rats to grow brain tumors…. yep.. that’s right! it’s in just about ALL sugar free drinks including crystal light and the stuff is terrible for you…
Your best health bet is to stick with water… because really, all sodas are terrible for your body lol

great post!!! I need to have a diet coke/pepsi once a day…I know its bad for me(worse than milk/water/tea) but ever since I quit smoking, I figure this caffiene “addiction” of one can a day is DEFINATELY better than smoking!

@cricket2082: I completely agree. I maybe have one diet coke a day if that. My morning caffeine is from green tea, sometimes black tea. I usually have a diet coke around 3p.m. when I start getting tired midday. After that, it’s back to sparkling water for me.
