My best friend has graciously offered to fly in for a weekend and help me choose my wedding dress. She is the only person who can realistically come shopping with me that I actually want there (as all my other close friends and family live out of the country). She would come the 2nd week in January, and the wedding is May 26. Is that cutting it too close? Should I start looking for a wedding dress on my own? I’ve already indicated I want to go dress shopping, although I didn’t realize how long alterations take! But, it’s a really special thing to be a part of and I would love to go with my best friend.
Your input is helpful, thanks 🙂

@Au Jardin: It really depends on what dress your getting…though I personally think that you are cutting it too close. On average it takes about 3-4 months just for your dress to arrive..if there is any delay then it may take longer and ideally you should have 2 months for alterations.

That does sound like it’s not going to be enough time unless you plan to buy a sample gown.
Can you start out shopping at salons that allow photos and text her pictures of each one?

That’s my wedding date and when I was shopping I was usually advised to order before the holidays. However, I ended up getting a sample gown because they had my size and it was discounted and in good shape. Honestly, I think it might depend on what size you were. My wedding dress is a 16 but a lot of salons didn’t have those sizes. If you can wear a common sample size like a 10 you’ll have much better luck.
Also, it seems like some salons/designers can get you something quicker, you’ll just pay for it.

I ordered my dress only 3 months out from my wedding. I did get it from Alfred Angelo so I guess it was easier for them to rush it than some designer’s gowns. Depending on what you are looking for and where you go, it might not be too late. Maybe you can call some places before January to see if it is possible?

I ordered my dress at the end of October and it came in at the end of February which is pretty much 4 months. It needed minimal alterations but it still took about 2 months for the whole process for various fitting appointments and getting things just right.

It depends on what you dress go with. Some dresses can take 6-8 months to be made.
