I pay $20 a month at Retro Fitness.  I think it’s definitely worth it.  I don’t shower there, but I’m sure there’s people that do if they go work out right before work.

ETA: And our gym has a movie theater in it so it makes it a lot more fun.

My membership just expired. I was paying 28 dollars a month. I used it a lot of first 3-4 months, but then I stopped using it. So for me it was a waste of money. If it helps you with motivation, then id say go for it, but there is also workouts you can do at home that you will get as good of results.

I pay $10 a month at Planet Fitness. I absolutely think that it is worth it. I also don’t shower there but I know that people do sometimes.

I also wouldn’t worry about people watching you work out. Most people at the gym are too busy concentrating on what they are doing to watch other people. Sometimes when I run I will scan the room but I never really watch anyone or judge them, I’m just a natural people watcher and I don’t like looking at the tv the whole time.

A lot of people say it isn’t worth it.  If you are going to do it, look for a gym that has classes.  I know that for myself, if I go in, I don’t know what exercises I should do and if I even do the exercises right on the machines.

@AmyDee: I used to pay $30 a month. It wasn’t worth it because I hated having to go out to work out and also having other people around. I went regularly for a few months and then my motivation just petered out. I ended up paying $30/month for a lot of months that I didn’t use because it was just too embarassing and difficult to cancel the membership.

More recently, I bought an ellipitcal machine and it was totally worth it! I paid about $700 for it and got a good deal because it was the floor model. With my elliptical and some free weights, I can get a good workout without having to leave the house. And after a year and a half, I’m still using my elliptical.

It depends on what you want to do.  I like to run, and don’t mind running when it is cold, so I probably wouldn’t use it.  Darling Husband likes using weights and the machines, so he gets more use out of it then we do.

We have been test driving gyms out (most give you trial passes to test run) and have been quoted anywhere from $25 – $50 a month.  The $50 a month (for both of us, not each) was at Wilson’s Fitness, and included all of the classes they offered – yoga, spinning, etc.

Personally I love my gym. I can’t really do home workouts because we have a very tiny apartment (no room to move around) and very thin walls so my downstairs neighbors can always hear me pounding on their ceiling. :-

I go in the mornings before work and yes I shower there. My gym is pretty well equiped… They offer towel service, the showers have shampoo/conditioner/soap and the locker rooms have blow dryers. A lot of women shower at my gym.

My Fiance runs outside and has to schedule his work outs around the weather… Me? I don’t have that excuse. 😀 I don’t take any classes, just because I’m a solo workout person. I hop on a treadmill/elliptical/bike, etc, put my music on and do my thing.

It’s different for everyone though! You really need to decide if it’s worth it for YOU and the kind of workout you’re looking for.

My husband & I have a YMCA membership. Its 500 some dollars for a year. We pay 50 dollars a month. My husband loves it! (Its the only gym around or we would find somthing cheaper.) But it is worth it I suppose. He has alot of work out stuff just sitting at home never being used now but there is alot more at the Y. I even go & run in the mornings.

@AmyDee: Oh that’s awesome!! My old apt complex had a small fitness center in the basement and I freakin’ loved it! I think it’s the only thing I miss about that place. Haha!

@AmyDee: You could look into used ellipticals on craigslist. Your apartment fitness facility probably has one though, so that should be a perfect solution!

I think it is absolutely worth it to get a gym membership if you are ready to make a change. I have struggled wiht my weight for years, mostly becuase I am lazy and I just love food! Something finally clicked for me and I am working out 6 times per week. I feel so much better about myself, inside and out. The gym is really helpful becuase there are a lot of different things to do. I can get on the elliptical, take a spin class, yoga, zumba, and still have a lot of options for strength training. I highly suggest joining a gym…. if you are really ready to make a change. Otherwise you will be wasting your money!
