I’ve never heard of it being bad for the diamonds themselves, but definitely beats up the rhodium plating on white gold.

Hand sanitizer is basically alcohol.  It shouldn’t be a problem but the extra rubbing around will cause wear and tear on plattings and finish.

I’ve wondered the same thing!

It may damage the metal, but it shouldn’t hurt the diamonds themselves. However, it will form a film over top of them that makes them less sparkly, until you get it cleaned.

Any time you rub your hands together with something like hand santizier or lotion, skin cells slough off and mix up with whatever you’re rubbing with.  As you rub the stuff around, a niiice cocktail of skin cell + sanitizer will get into the nooks and crannies of your ring.  As the alcohol evaporates, the cells are left behind and you will find, after a time, that your ring doesn’t look as shiny as it used to.  That’s because your dead cells got all up in the prongs n junk.

It’s probably not damaging to the ring to use hand sanitizer, but I don’t think it’s…aesthetically helpful, either.

No, it will not hurt the metal. The only things you have to worry about are mercury and chlorines. While friction will eventually rub off the rhodium plating, it isn’t just going to dissolve off. No worries! You can’t hurt the diamonds unless you scratch them against each other.

I have yellow gold and work in healthcare, and the only thing I’ve noticed is that the hand sanitizer we buy leaves an almost purplish film on my ring that won’t wash off. I have to use a buff cloth to polish it away. But like ejs4y8 said, it won’t dissolve the plating (assuming you have white gold) but definitely don’t wear your ring when using harsh cleaners.

I’m a constant hand sanitizer user too.  I always just rub it on the fingertips and palm of my ring hand to try to avoid getting it on my ring but still get the job done.

I always take my ring off before using hand sanitizer (and I use a TON) because I’m afraid of the alcohol’s effects on the white gold.
