So, we are having an autumn themed wedding next year, and it is an evening wedding with a light appetizer reception (so no meal being served).. There is a rental company in my area which rents out an antique popcorn machine, and I thought it would be really cute and sort of matches our theme (I just think fair foods when I think autumn.. to me popcorn seems to fit) but my mom told me that it will seem like my wedding is carnival themed, which it definitely is not! It will also allow for some extra foods at the reception and we could offer different seasonings.. plus this will double as our favor as well. We are also considering having a candy buffet as well.
Please tell me I will not look like I’m hosting a carnival!! I do not want that! lol

Definitely not a carnival, although I may be biased because we are having a popcorn machine and toppings as part of our “late night snack”. When we’ve mentioned this to people they get very excited, because who doesn’t love fresh popped popcorn??

We had a popcorn machine (and ice cream tricycle) with drinks after the ceremony (before the meal) and it went down really well!

This sounds fun! Go for it!

I think it sets a rather casual tone but if that’s in keeping with your overall look/feel then go for it. The two “down sides” that jump to mind are, it can be a bit messy if folks are dressed up, especially if there’s cheese-type toppings/flavorings; and popcorn isn’t the most filling food so counting it equal with your other appetizers might leave folks a bit hungry.

@fishbone: I will keep that cheese thing in mind! SomethingI never would have though of.. however we will have lots of other foods too.. meat platters, cheese trays, fruit and veggie trays, sandwiches, crackers, chips, etc.. a big variety of small appetizer like food, so no worries of people being hungry. 🙂
Thank you all for the input.. glad I won’t need to work on my clown costume before I arrive 😉

I agree with fishbone it sets a casual tone, but if I was a guest at your wedding, I would love it. Fresh popped popcorn is one of my favorite things.

I think if you had carnival games, cotton candy, and a popcorn machine THEN it would be carinval themed. Just a popcorn machine is fine.

Popcorn = summer to me, because of all the state fairs, summer blockbusters, etc. I wouldn’t eat it ultimately because of the grease/oils.

I’m definitely ok with the casual tone.. mostly everything else will be pretty casual as well. We have a pretty popular “fall fair” in my town, and it takes place in September, so I guess I tend to associate popcorn with that.
Honestly, I don’t even like popcorn… but I know my guests would. I want it to be a nice mix of casual and elegant, but I definitely don’t want it to look like a joke!

We are having a popcorn bar instead of a candy bar during our cocktail reception. Not carnival at all, just dont use the rainbow popcorn 🙂
Were going with Garretts Chicago Mic ( my favourite ), classic butter salt, caramel and we havent decided on the 4th…but definitely something savoury.
This is my inspiration
